  PM May to meet Rajoy in Madrid; self determination debate at UN decolonization committee

  

  Prime Minister Theresa May will meet Spain’s caretaker Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, in Madrid on Thursday for talks on a range of issues including Brexit. The visit to Spain is part of a string of meetings in European capitals as Mrs May appeals for a fair “divorce deal” from Brussels for the UK.

It’s “No way, Jose”, so get used to it”, was the direct and clear message from Chief Minister Fabian Picardo to the Caretaker Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo who on Wednesday night vowed to “plant his flag on Gibraltar”.

  Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said that all the potential economic benefits from joint UK/Spain Gibraltar sovereignty could exist today if Spain respected the Gibraltarians' choice not to be Spanish. The statement was in response to Spain's formal invitation to the UK to commence joint sovereignty negotiations on Gibraltar.

  London dismisses bilateral dialogue over Gibraltar; “UK's position on sovereignty remains unchanged”

  

  Britain has dismissed a formal Spanish request for bilateral dialogue over Gibraltar, the Gibraltar Chronicle has published. A letter from acting Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo was handed to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office by a senior official from the Spanish embassy in London on September 20.

  Catalonia challenges Madrid and will hold an independence referendum next year

  

  Catalonia is to hold a referendum on independence in a year’s time in a move that will infuriate Madrid but which should also return power to the pro-indy campaign in the regional assembly.   Argentine judge opens investigation on death of one of Spain's greatest modern poets

  

  An Argentine federal judge has opened an investigation into the death of Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, who is believed to have been executed in 1936 by forces loyal to General Francisco Franco. Garcia Lorca’s fate remains a mystery after the site near the Spanish city of Granada where he was believed to have been buried was excavated in 2009 without finding human remains.

  Spanish King “concerned” with political paralysis; no stable government in sight

  

  King Felipe VI is “concerned” with Spain's political paralysis, a lawmaker who met him said as the monarch began a fourth round of talks with party representatives to try and agree on a government. Spain has been without a fully-functioning government for seven months after December elections failed to give any party an absolute parliamentary majority.
