  Former IMF director and Spanish minister detained accused of fraud

  

  The former director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Spaniard Rodrigo Rato, has been detained by police in Madrid. Rato, who has also been Economy Minister during Spanish President José María Aznar’s administration, is accused of money laundering and fraud.

  Unlikely Gibraltar talks in 2015: elections in UK, Spain and the Rock

  

  If tripartite talks were restarted between Gibraltar, Spain and UK and agreements reached, as they were under the ‘Cordoba’ experience, these would almost certainly need to take the form of treaties so that Spain can be relied on to stick to them.   Germany and Spain mourn the loss 150 people in air crash in the French Alps

  

  Hundreds turned out in the western German town of Haltern am See to mourn 16 students and two teachers lost in Tuesday’s Germanwings crash in the French Alps. The Airbus A320 crashed en route to Dusseldorf from Barcelona, likely killing all 150 on board, in what would be the worst air accident on French soil in three decades. Spain declared three days of national mourning.

  Gibraltar police and customs officers have been given additional stop and search powers inside so-called tobacco ‘special zones’. Until now, officers required reasonable suspicion of a tobacco offence before they could stop vehicles and question the occupants.

  Hammond reiterates in Spain: no talks against the wishes of Gibraltar

  

  The British and Spanish foreign ministers sought to highlight a renewed drive toward an ‘ad hoc’ dialogue on Gibraltar this week, but in doing so drew firm red lines that signaled just how difficult that task will prove. The coordinated message was positive and hinted at the possibility of talks ‘in the near future’ if a format could be agreed. But on core issues, there was no change.

  Spanish diplomat expert in Gibraltar affairs will head EU Defense Agency

  

  Jorge Domecq, the senior Spanish diplomat who headed the Gibraltar desk at the Spanish Foreign Ministry including during the Tripartite Forum period, has been appointed as the next European Defense Agency Chief Executive. This comes as a result of a selection process which started last December.
