  “Uruguayan government in deep crisis”, admits Mujica with a split cabinet and two economic teams

  

  “The Uruguayan government is in deep crisis” admitted President Jose Mujica following an open clash between ministers that called for an urgent meeting of the cabinet and half way had to be adjourned on fears that recriminations could get out of control. A recess was ordered but the squabbling through the press continued and the exposed deep rift remains more than a challenge.

  Human right activists in Uruguay storm the Supreme Court to protest judge’s transfer

  

  The Uruguayan police evicted dozens of protestors that during three hours occupied the seat of the Supreme Court to impede the transfer of a magistrate, closely linked to human rights cases, from the criminal to the civil forum. Magistrate Mariana Mota has dealt with some of Uruguay’s most notorious human rights cases dating back to the twelve years of military dictatorship, (1973/1985).

  Uruguayan lawmakers confirm they will travel to Falklands for the referendum

  

  At least two Uruguayan lawmakers have confirmed to the British embassy in Montevideo that they will be travelling to the Falkland Islands next March for the referendum on the Islands political status and future. The trips are financed by the embassy and according to parliament sources in Montevideo the list could become longer.The news was published in a Montevideo weekly.

  Air France returns to Uruguay as of next April with five flights a week

  

  Uruguay seems to be recovering its air connectivity after a rough year that saw the closing down of its flag air carrier Pluna, and the announcement by Spanish airline Iberia that it will cease flights between Montevideo and Madrid as of next April. Iberia is the only European airline currently calling in Uruguay.

  This Friday the Malvinas Forum, chapter Uruguay will be celebrating its first anniversary and is expected to announce a statement strongly rejecting the coming referendum in the Falklands on the Islands political status which is scheduled for March 10/11. The meeting will be held in Maldonado where it was originally launched.

  Uruguay promotes a free trade agreement of Mercosur with Canada

  

  Foreign minister Luis Almagro announced that Uruguay will work for a free trade agreement between Mercosur and Canada during the first half of the year when Uruguay holds the chair of the South American group that also includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Venezuela.

  January inflation in Uruguay confirms strong hike tendency

  

  Inflation in Uruguay climbed 1.9% in January totalling 8.72% in the last twelve months, according to the latest release from the government’s stats office, INE. Last year twelve month inflation reached 7.48% and for this year the government established a target of 4% to 6%.
