    Presidents Yamandú Orsi of Uruguay and José Raúl Mulino of Panama met Monday at the Palacio de las Garzas to discuss the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and other bilateral issues. The newly-inaugurated Broad Front leader's trip reciprocated Mulino’s prior visits to Uruguay, which facilitated Panama’s entry as an Associated State of Mercosur in December 2024. The meeting also took place as part of the celebrations marking 120 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

    Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi Friday underscored his country's strengths, such as legal certainty, reliability in keeping commitments, and a tradition of resolving challenges through dialogue. He made those remarks during the Latin Annual Meeting business forum in the department (province) of Maldonado. Also attending the event were former Presidents Julio María Sanguinetti of Uruguay and Vicente Fox of Mexico, who also spoke at the event.

    Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi suspended for 180 days a regulation passed last month by the previous administration of Luis Lacalle Pou concerning the National Institute of Animal Welfare (INBA) to prioritize animal welfare in horsetaming (jineteadas). The newly-inaugurated head of State said the measure approved last Feb. 10 was too strict to rural sectors, forcing them to cancel several traditional events.
