    Anti-inflation plan cost Uruguay 0.8% of GDP in 7 months

    Public utilities rates subsidies which have been applied since September 2007 to help contain inflation have cost the Uruguayan treasury 185 million US dollars, equivalent to 0.8% of the country's GDP. Prices are estimated to have moderated 1.5% on an annual basis.

    US and Uruguay sign technology cooperation accord

    United States and Uruguay signed on Tuesday a bilateral agreement to promote and increase cooperation in Science and Technology. The agreement was signed by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Uruguay's Foreign Affairs minister Gonzalo Fernandez during a ceremony at the State Department.

    Uruguay acts to contain US dollar fall in local market

    Uruguay announced a package of measures to contain the effects of a collapsing US dollar in the local money market and to combat inflation. The local currency, Uruguayan peso, has appreciated almost 7% against the US dollar in the first four months of 2008 and has dropped to June 2002 levels which has caused concern among the country's exporters.

    Illex season to begin in Argentina/Uruguay common fishing zone

    The Joint Technical Commission for the Argentine-Uruguay Maritime Front (CTMFM) agreed to open the squid (Illex argentinus) fishery in the bilateral Common Fishing Zone. The resolution was published in Argentina's Official Bulletin of 22 April, and is set to come into force once it is published in Uruguay's Official Bulletin

    Uruguayan cooks barbecue meat in an attempt to break a record for the world's largest barbecue in Montevideo

    Over a thousand grill chefs helped Uruguay establish a new Guinness record when on Sunday they prepared the biggest barbecue in the world, 12 tons of prime beef and thus beating the previous 8 ton record from Mexico.

    Uruguay considering food price subsidies to contain inflation

    Uruguay's March consumer price index CPI jumped 1.14%, the highest since last August and fourth running in the past six months, according to the latest release from the Statistics Office. Government officials expressed concern but cautioned that “consumer inflation has become a challenge all over the world”.

    Uruguay's exports of goods and services reached a record 6.825 billion US dollars in 2007, up 18% over 2006 according to data released by the Central Bank and published in the Montevideo media.
