US marines land for military exercise in Puerto Belgrano

United States marines, as well as from Chile and Brazil were involved in an amphibious exercise with the Argentine Navy in Puerto Belgrano home port of the Argentine fleet. The exercise was described by the Argentine media as evidence of a growing military rapprochement between the two countries.

Argentina authorized the export of 45.000 tons of beef, following on June's 51.000 tons but still short of orders for 77.000 tons. The monthly export figures are regulated by an agreement reached between the government and farmers' organization which privileges domestic consumption.

Over 11 million Argentines live in poverty or indigence

Rising inflation in the first half of 2008 has meant that 11.3 million Argentines are poor, of which 3.9 million indigent, a significant increase over the previous six months according to a report from a private consultants firm released on Tuesday.
