  Chile extends state of emergency in violence-torn south

  

  Chile's Senate Tuesday passed a bill to extend the current state of emergency in La Araucanía and part of Biobío in force since mid-May 2022 to allow the armed forces to participate in the fight against violent groups operating in the area due to the so-called “Mapuche conflict” involving indigenous communities, logging companies and law enforcement authorities.

  Mapuche rebels arrested in southern Chile

  

  Chilean authorities in the Biobío region announced Thursday the arrest of at least 11 leaders of the Mapuche Lafkenche Resistance (RML), a radical group behind numerous attacks in the south of the country as a result of the territorial dispute between the state, indigenous groups and forestry companies that exploit lands considered ancestral by the indigenous people.

  Argentine President assures Chile a natural gas supply through 2024

  

  Argentine President Alberto Fernández Thursday said his country would guarantee the supply of natural gas to neighboring Chile until Dec. 31, 2024, it was reported in Buenos Aires. With Bolivia's production declining, South America is looking to Vaca Muerta as a possible source, it was also explained. Between January and July, Argentina sold Chile US$ 556 million worth of natural gas, an 86.8% growth from the same period last year.
