    History of the Falklands Interim Conservation Zone

    The zone had a 160-nauticalmile radius and on February first, 1987 the Falkland Islands Fisheries (Conservation and Management) Ordinance came in to effect.

    On October 29 1986, a proclamation declaring the Interim Falklands Conservation Zone was signed by Governor Gordon Jewkes. The zone had a 160-nauticalmile (300 km; 180 mi) radius. On February 1, 1987 the Falkland Islands Fisheries (Conservation and Management) Ordinance came in to effect.

    Falklands celebrates in an Open Day the 30th anniversary of the Fishery

     MLA Phyl Rendell underlined the significance of the fishing industry, but also support from UK in protecting the Fishing Zone and fishery’s overseas partners.

    Around 360 Falklands residents visited the floating dock FIPASS on Saturday 25th February as part of Fish Day – celebrating 30 years of the Falkland Islands Fishery. The Falkland Islands Fishing Association (FIFCA) Executive Secretary Jackie Cotter told Penguin News the day went very well and its aim, as well as celebrating the anniversary, was to give a general overview both of the fishery and the Falklands Government Fisheries Department.

    Falklands demining accident; work continues normally in other minefields

    Demining in minefield SA032 has been suspended temporarily pending results of a full investigation which will be carried out by the Demining Project Office

    A member of the demining team is receiving treatment in hospital following a demining accident on 27 February, reports the Falkland Islands government. During routine demining, a Team Leader, suffered minor injuries to his hand following an explosion. The incident occurred in minefield SA032 located in Moody Valley, to the west of Stanley.

    Falklands' Loligo season opens; Vigo market squid prices are “strong”

    The Loligo squid season took off this weekend in the Falkland Islands and the Galician partners of local companies are hopeful that they can repeat catches of the last season when some 46.000 tons were landed. “The experimental sampling previous to the official launching points to stability”, according to Javier Touza president of ARVI, the Vigo cooperative of vessel owners.

    Falklands/UK RAF air bridge called at Brazilian airports, claims Argentina

    According to Malvinas Desk archives during 2015, there were 12 similar flights by the RAF calling in Brazil and which were detected by the Argentine Air Force.

    At least six Royal Air Force flights linking UK with Falklands' MPA, during 2016, called at Brazilian airports, claimed the Argentine foreign ministry Malvinas Desk based on information supplied by the country's Air Traffic Control office.

    Falklands: Argentine human rights/political delegation to the Islands with a message of peace and dialogue

    At least fourteen human rights, social, religious and political leaders from Argentina are planning to travel to the Falkland Islands in mid March hoping to meet Islanders with a message of peace and dialogue. The delegation includes Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, 1980 Peace Nobel Prize, Nora Cortiñas, founder of one of the several branches in which the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo are split, and members of the Memory Commission, according to reports from Buenos Aires.

    Ex Falklands governor and local hero dies peacefully in Ireland

    Ex Falkland’s governor Sir Cosmo Haskard KCMG MBE passed away peacefully at his home in Tregariff, County Cork, Ireland on Tuesday. Sir Haskard was Governor from 1964 to 1970, an advocate of the Islands and played a major role in preventing the transfer of sovereignty to Argentina. He celebrated his 100th birthday last year.
