  Falklands delegation present at Gibraltar National Day on Sunday

  

  A group of eighteen members from the House of Commons and the House of Lords will be in Gibraltar this week on a working visit for National Day, Sunday September 10. They will coincide with a separate delegation of leaders from the British Overseas Territories, including Falkland Islands representatives who will engage in preparatory work with a view to the next meeting of the Joint Ministerial Council with the UK in November.

  Falklands: joint helicopter/offshore patrol vessel logistics exercises

  

  HMS Medway, a Batch 2 River-class offshore patrol vessel, has recently conducted a joint training exercise with Bristow Search and Rescue off the Falkland Islands. The collaboration involved the mastering of winching drills.

  Cargo ship faces fine for sailing between Stanley and Mar del Plata with no Argentine permit

  

  Authorities in the port of Mar del Plata have started administrative proceedings against the Panama-flagged Frio Marathon frozen cargo ship stemming from Stanley in the Falkland/Malvinas Islands without an Argentine permit. The vessel had been sailing the archipelago since 2014 and could now face a high fine, it was explained.

  Merchant Navy Day celebration

  

  Sunday September 3rd, was Merchant Navy Day, an event celebrated in the UK and also in the Falkland Islands, where maritime access is crucial for the life of the Islands. Richard Hyslop, Falklands representative in UK and Europe underlined the significance of the date.

  Tributes have been paid to ex-paratrooper, charity co-founder and Falklands veteran Denzil Connick, 66, who passed away after a battle with cancer on Sunday 3 September. .

  South Georgia celebrates Toothfish Day; marks the end of Dissostichus eleginoides', fishing season

  

  Toothfish Day is a public holiday celebrated in the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It is annually on 4th September, but if that falls on a weekend it may be observed on a weekday.

  South Georgia Biosecurity Handbook Update Released

  

  The latest version of the Government of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands Biosecurity Handbook is now available online. The Handbook details the procedures which are in place to help reduce the risk of harmful non-native species and disease entering the Territory, along with the steps in place to detect them and limit their spread should they arrive.

  Consistent decline of biomass forces Falklands early closure of Loligo season

  

  The Falkland Islands Fisheries Department (FIFD) conducted a pre-season survey for the winter Loligo ‘X’ licence season, working in close partnership with local companies. The survey results showed the lowest winter pre-season survey biomass estimates since 2008, a total of 19,859 tons.
