    The Scottish and UK governments have held “constructive” talks over Brexit, but are still a long way from a deal. Scotland's Deputy First Minister John Swinney and Brexit minister Mike Russell met First Secretary of State Damian Green in London to discuss concerns about the EU Withdrawal Bill.

    Brazilian government revokes decree opening Amazon reserve to mining

     From the moment president Michel Temer signed the decree in August opening the reserve to commercial mining, it was widely condemned.

    The Brazilian government has revoked a controversial decree that would have opened up a vast reserve in the Amazon to commercial mining. The area, covering 46,000 sq km, straddles the northern states of Amapa and Para and is thought to be rich in gold, iron, manganese and other minerals.

    Argentina's GDP expands 2,7% in second quarter over a year ago

    The announcement is good news for President Mauricio Macri’s “Let’s Change” coalition ahead of mid-term congressional elections next month.

    Argentina’s gross domestic product grew 2.7% in the second quarter versus the same period last year and expanded by 0.7% versus the first three months of 2017, the government’s Indec statistics agency said.

    The United Kingdom thanked Brazil for its continued commitment to the Universal Periodic Review process, which took place at the Palais del Nations in Geneva, during the 27th Session of the Universal Periodic Review on 21 September 2017. The UPR is a process which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States. The UPR is a State-driven process, under the auspices of the Human Rights Council.

    New Zealand with caretaker government until final count of votes

    Gibraltar Regiment officer assists training of Chilean UN force contingent

    The Royal Gibraltar Regiment recently deployed one of its officers to Santiago in Chile. Major Timothy Cumming deployed from July 12/August 2 to Santiago to assist in the delivery of some critical Pre-Deployment Training (PDT). This training was delivered to members of the Chilean Armed Forces that were going to make up the latest United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) contingent.
