  Argentina: The Minister of Defense will retire two senior officers for the ARA San Juan tragedy

  

  Argentina's defence minister, Oscar Aguad, will publish on Monday a summary prepared by the Mayor state of that country, Infobae reported, establishing the military responsibilities of the Navy in the sinking of the submarine ARA San Juan, found at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean on November 2018, one year after its vanishing.

  Argentina condemns British MEP's likening foreign fishing to Belgrano sinking

  

  Argentina harshly condemned the “lamentable declarations of British MEP Robert Rowland” in which he threatened foreign fishing in the Falklands area with “the same treatment as the Belgrano,” in reference to the Argentine cruise sunk by the United Kingdom during the 1982 war.

  East Falkland, among most plastic contaminated shores in South Atlantic Islands

  

  The amount of plastic washing up onto the shores of remote South Atlantic islands is ten times greater than it was a decade ago, according to new research published in the journal Current Biology. Scientists investigating plastics in seas surrounding the remote British Overseas Territories, including East Falkland, discovered they are invading these unique biologically-rich regions. This includes areas that are established or proposed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

  Pro and anti-whaling nations are set for a showdown when the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meets in Brazil from Monday as Japan leads an assault on a three-decade old moratorium on commercial whale hunting. Tokyo heads into the biennial meeting as chair of the 88-nation body determined to shake-up what it says is a dysfunctional organization mired in dispute and unable to make key decisions.

  Homicide charges for seven top officials linked to Brazil's worst mining accident

  

  Brazilian authorities have charged the president of mining company Samarco and six others with homicide for the mining disaster that killed 19 people last November. Police in Minas Gerais State have asked for Ricardo Vescovi, along with five other Samarco executives and one contractor to be arrested.

  The biggest fireball since the Chelyabinsk explosion has plunged through the atmosphere over the Atlantic Ocean. The event, which has only just come to light, occurred off the coast of Brazil at 13:55 GMT on 6 February.

  Ascension Island to become a marine reserve as big as the UK, in 2017

  

  The British Overseas Territory of Ascension Island is set to become a marine reserve almost as big as the UK, the British government has announced. Using a £300,000 grant from the Bacon Foundation, the UK government will close 52.6% of the south Atlantic island's waters to fishing. In the rest of the waters there will be a monitored tuna fishery.

  UN accepts extension of Uruguay's continental shelf to 350 miles; first in South America

  

  The United Nations accepted the proposition of the Uruguayan government to extend the Uruguayan territorial seabed from 200 to 350 miles. Uruguay thus becomes the first South American nation to receive the approval of the UN for such request.

  “Possible submerged continent” found in the Atlantic off the coast of Brazil

  

  A large mass of granite has been found on the seabed off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, suggesting that a continent may have existed in the Atlantic Ocean, a Japanese agency and the Brazilian government announced this week.
