    Peru: Boluarte undergoes cabinet reshuffle

    Peruvian President Dina Boluarte Sunday took the oath of office from four new ministers. Particularly striking was the appointment of Daniel Maurate to replace José Tello on the same day that former President Alejandro Toledo was brought in from the United States to stand trial for influence peddling and money laundering in a spinoff of the Odebrecht scandal. Tello had dubbed Toledo a “criminal.”

    Peru: Motion to impeach Boluarte fails to get through Congress

    Boluarte said the motion to impeach was an “obscure political maneuver”

    Peru's one-house Congress Tuesday dismissed a motion to impeach President Dina Boluarte for “moral incapacity” by 64 votes to 37, and 10 abstentions. A reconsideration mooted immediately afterward was also rejected by 67 votes to 34 and, again, 10 abstentions. In view of these results, Congress Speaker José Williams ordered the case shelved.

    Peruvian authorities reopened the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu Wednesday following 25 days of closure as a result of mounting violence since the impeachment of Pedro Castillo Terrones and the ensuing protests demanding President Dina Boluarte's resignation and fresh elections, among other measures.

    State of emergency spread to other Peruvian departments

    Boluarte's decree also extended a curfew between 8 pm and 4 am already in force in Puno to the other departments involved

    At least 26 people were arrested, including an underaged suspect, late Saturday in Lima amid new demonstrations against the government of President Dina Boluarte, it was reported. Five people -4 protesters and 1 police officer- also needed to be hospitalized due to the injuries sustained during the street clashes in which law enforcement used pellets and teargas. Several journalists have denounced having been beaten by the Police trying to control peasant unions, private organizations, and student groups.

    Peru's Congress once again votes against advancing elections

    Had the bill been passed, the new authorities would take office in May 2024

    Peru's Congress refused once again Wednesday to bring forward the elections to 2023 as requested by President Dina Boluarte who was acquiescing to the demands of the numerous demonstrators that flocked the streets and roads since the Dec. 7 impeachment of Pedro Castillo Terrones.

    Peru's Congress agrees to reconsider moving elections forward

    The motion to reconsider was approved, Williams announced

    Peru's one-house Congress Monday approved by 66 votes in favor, 49 against, and 6 abstentions to reconsider a previous decision on not moving forward the elections to sometime this year. Lawmakers are now to decide on a possible date.
