    Exposed C24 chairman agrees to receive Gibraltar's Picardo to match a meeting with Spanish minister

    Lasso Mendoza admitted having met a Spanish minister to address Gibraltar and when exposed agreed to meet Picardo 'if the Chief Minister requested it'.

    Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo is in New York for a meeting with the Chairman of the UN’s Decolonization Committee of 24, ambassador Xavier Lasso Mendoza. The meeting arose from the Chief Minister’s intervention before the C24 last month, during which the Ecuadorian diplomat confirmed he had met with a Spanish government minister to discuss Gibraltar, according or a report from the Gibraltar Chronicle.

    “Best brains of Gibraltar” will work together in a Consultative Council

    “This is a seminal piece of legislation; I believe that the UK Privy Council model is a good one for us to follow in establishing such a body” said CM Picardo

    The ‘best brains in Gibraltar’ will work together for the common good under plans for a proposed Gibraltar Consultative Council. The aim is to set up a permanent forum that will work along the same lines as the UK’s Privy Council, providing non-partisan advice to the Chief Minister of the day on issues of national importance, reports the Gibraltar Chronicle.

    Unlikely Gibraltar talks in 2015: elections in UK, Spain and the Rock

    “It is always better to be talking than it might be to be fighting”, said Chief Minister Picardo.

    If tripartite talks were restarted between Gibraltar, Spain and UK and agreements reached, as they were under the ‘Cordoba’ experience, these would almost certainly need to take the form of treaties so that Spain can be relied on to stick to them. Nevertheless 2015 is year of elections in UK, Spain and Gibraltar.

    UK corrects Spain and El Pais: no change in Gibraltar Tripartite talks

    Ambassador Manley stated “there is no change to our strong and continued commitment to the Trilateral Forum for dialogue.”

    Spanish Foreign Ministry briefings to media designed to reinforce Spain’s assertion that the Tripartite Talks are dead were challenged this weekend by the UK Government. In an unusual move Simon Manley, the British Ambassador to Spain, wrote to El Pais to correct their report which suggested that the ad hoc talks were a new phase of dialogue replacing the tripartite talks and that UK had changed its position on talks.

    Gibraltar contracts top politician to lobby for the Rock's interests in Brussels

    “The Government is delighted that Sir Graham Watson has agreed to work for Gibraltar and its people,” said Chief Minister Fabian Picardo.

    Sir Graham Watson has been hired by the Gibraltar Government to represent the Rock in Brussels on a three-year contract. His recruitment is part of Gibraltar's move to strengthen its presence in Brussels to ensure that Gibraltar’s voice is heard on issues that may impact on the Rock’s community and economy.

    Fallon visits Gibraltar and reaffirms UK support to deal with unlawful Spanish incursions

     “My visit proves once more that the UK takes Spanish incursions very seriously, and will continue to deal robustly with them”, said Fallon.

    Gibraltar on National Day celebration calls on QE II to again visit the Rock

    CM Picardo said: “60 years ago we were last visited by Her Majesty the Queen on her first tour of her kingdom.”

    Sixty years after her last visit the Chief Minister has called on Queen Elizabeth II to visit Gibraltar. He did so in a dramatic call during his National day speech. Fabian Picardo was flanked on stage by Gibraltar Government Ministers, Opposition MPs and a contingent of visiting British MPs and MEPs.
