    Falklands reacts and prepares for implications of Theresa May Brexit speech

    Lawmaker Michael Poole said MLAs had watched and read PM’s Brexit speech and “helpfully it provided more detail in relation to UK’s negotiating approach.”

    The United Kingdom's intention to leave the single market as outlined in Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit speech on Tuesday has generated some concerns for the Falkland Islands Government, but a Member of the Legislative Assembly indicated this week they are still confident all will be well for the Islands under post- 2019 arrangements.

    The Falkland Islands Government is under no pressure from the UK government to agree to something that we feel is not in our best interests, and ”the final decision on (additional) flights will be ours, and ours alone”. The statement belongs to the elected Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands' chair of the month, Barry Elsby.

    Falkland Islands marks calendar of 2017 key anniversaries

    In addition, FIG is currently working on a small booklet chronicling the development of the Falkland Islands over the past 35 years

    The Falkland Islands government, FIG, has recalled that 2017 marks a number of key anniversaries in the Islands, including the 35th Anniversary of the Falklands War. There is currently a small working group looking to coordinate remembrance events in Stanley, though much of what is planned will be as normal and will continue to be due to the work done year-on-year by a wide range of volunteers and groups.

    Falklands/South America second flight to be addressed at Argentina/UK meeting next week

    MLA Mike Summers and MLA Phyl Rendell will be part of the British delegation discussing next week a second air link between Falklands and the continent

    Two Falklands lawmakers, MLA Mike Summers and MLA Phyl Rendell, will represent the Islands government as part of the British delegation at meetings with Argentina in London next Monday and Tuesday. According to a release from the Islands' government the principal item to be addressed is a second flight from South America to the Falklands that was agreed in a September Joint Statement between the UK and Argentina.

    Falklands: Chilean students to specialize in English living and working in the Islands

    MLA Elsby representing the Falklands Education Department recently signed an MOU with the Chilean British University in Santiago, Chile.

    Students from Chile are seeking work in both the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) and the private sector, including in Camp. Falklands' lawmaker MLA Barry Elsby said the students will have a good level of English when they arrive and will not need any formal English tuition.

    Argentine yacht rescued by Falklands en route back to Mar del Plata

    The Argentine yacht “La Sanmartiniana”, which had been spotted and rescued, abandoned in the high seas, October 2015 by a Falklands Fisheries Protection patrol finally left the Islands on Sunday morning 27 November and is in route to Mar del Plata with a stop in Puerto Deseado, reported Robert King, Falkland Islands government Collector of Customs, Registar of Ships, Shipping Master, Receiver of Wreck and Admiralty Marshal.

    Falklands refreshes long term Economic Development Strategy

    The goal is to deliver a refreshed and updated Economic Development Strategy that provides a realistic delivery plan for the next five years

    The Falkland Islands Government announced that on Wednesday the Executive Council approved the Terms of Reference to update the Falkland Islands Economic Development Strategy. The existing EDS was published in October 2010 following an extensive, two-year consultation process, and was intended to provide a blueprint for economic growth and development to 2025.

    Falkland Islands Government welcomes better relationship with Argentina

    The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) has welcomed the agreement made between the Argentine and United Kingdom Governments, laid out under this morning’s joint statement. Speaking to the media, Members of the Falkland’s Legislative Assembly stated they “looked forward to a better relationship with Argentina”, especially in the areas of hydrocarbons, fisheries, shipping and tourism.

    ”The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) has seen the articles in the media attributed to the Argentine Foreign Minister, Susana Malcorra.

    The Falkland Islands Government has acknowledged it is aware of media coverage of Argentine foreign minister Susana Malcorra referred to proposals of possible air links between the Islands and Argentina as well as talks on other areas of interest such as the fishing and hydrocarbons industries.
