    Falkland Islands gears up for Illex Season 2018

    John Barton said 105 fishing vessel required licensing for the Illex squid season.

    The Falkland Islands Government are currently going through the annual process of licensing fishing vessels for the Illex squid fishery in their Conservation Zone. Illex are a migratory species of squid, caught in significant quantities in the South-West Atlantic annually. The product is mainly shipped to the Far East where it is consumed.

    Falklands holds consultation on Premier Oil environmental impact statement

    The offshore Sea Lion oilfield, located in the North Falklands Basin approximately 120 miles to the north of the Falkland Islands.

    An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has been submitted to the Falkland Islands Government by Premier Oil Exploration and Production Limited. The EIS covers the proposed development activity for Phase 1 of the offshore Sea Lion oilfield, located in the North Falklands Basin approximately 120 miles to the north of the Falkland Islands.

    Falklands announces appointment of new Director of Education

    The Falkland Islands Government has announced the appointment of Rachel Seddon as the new Director of Education for the Falkland Islands. Rachel has worked in education for the last twenty five years. In the last five years she has managed a wide curriculum at Assistant Principal level; led a sixth form college; and has been Director of Quality and Learner Support at a large London college.

    The Falkland Islands government, FIG, announced on 16 January the permanent appointment of Jeff McMahon as Chief of Police within the Royal Falkland Islands Police (RFIP). Mr. McMahon arrived in the Falkland Islands in May 2017 and was promoted to Detective Chief Inspector in July.

    Falklands congratulate Gibraltar political leader on his knighthood

     MLA Teslyn Barkman, said: “We were delighted to learn of Sir Joe receiving this well-deserved honour and offer him our warmest congratulations.”

    The Falkland Islands Government, FIG, has congratulated Gibraltar minister Joe Bossano on being awarded a knighthood in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for 2018. In a statement in which it described Sir Joe as a “long-standing friend of the Falkland Islands”, FIG said he has spoken vociferously in support of Falkland Islander’s right to self-determination at various international forums.

    Falklands' Concordia Bay ferry resumes operations

    The ferry is due to arrive in New Haven in the early hours of Friday morning.

    The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) confirmed on Thursday that Concordia Bay ferry operations will resume from midday on Friday 22 December.

    Falklands' election motivates support resolution in US House of Representatives

    Resolution, 650, was submitted by Representatives Mario Diaz Balart, Derek Kilmer and George Holding, and referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

    The United States 115th Congress has tabled resolution 650 recognizing the results of the free and fair elections for the new Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands held on 9 November 2017. The resolution, 650, was submitted last week by Representatives Mario Diaz Balart, Derek Kilmer and George Holding, and referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

    Falklands' Concordia Bay Ferry service rescheduled due to maintenance repairs

    Concordia Bay is a 45.5m Landing craft flagged in the Falklands as a passenger/cargo vessel and owned by Workboat Services Ltd.

    The Falkland Islands Government and Workboat Service Ltd, WSL, the company which owns the ferry linking East and West Falkland, have informed that the service will be suspended for an estimated two weeks next month, because the Concordia Bay has to undergo maintenance repairs in Punta Arenas.
