    Falkland Islands reply to Milko Schvartzman comments on fisheries

    There is only a small fleet (18) of Falkland flagged fishing vessels. These all operate to high standards as British vessels.

    The comments by Milko Schvartzman on the Falkland’s fishery in FIS on 2 June 2015, are incorrect and uninformed in many areas. We reject the inference that the Falkland Islands Government promotes a fisheries industry based on modern-day slavery and on piracy. The Falkland Islands have a long history of responsible environmental stewardship, and we pride ourselves on protecting and safeguarding our unique environment and the natural resources therein.

    Falklands' GDP dropped in 2013 because of lesser oil and gas activity

    MLA Michael Poole said that “such fluctuation is not unusual in the Falklands” since the Islands’ economy continues to be reliant on a few industries.

    The Falkland Islands Gross Domestic Product (GDP) dropped in 2013 primarily due to lesser oil activity according to a recent Executive Council paper that included updated figures from the FIG Economist Commenting on the paper, according to a report from the latest edition of the Penguin News.

    Falklands' trawlers under investigation for alleged misreported catches

    Fishing companies applied for the release of the vessels which had been called in by the Director of Fisheries John Barton for investigation in late June

    Three Falkland Islands fishing vessels' owner/operators were ordered by the Supreme Court to pay £200.000 security bonds to return to sea while investigations are ongoing on potential anomalies on their catches and species reports. The value of the vessels range between one and 3.5 million pounds.

    Bermuda Premier Michael Dunkley called for the British Overseas Territories (BOTs) to present a united front in key areas and for the leaders to work together to best represent the people of the region. Premier Dunkley opened on Thursday the Pre-Joint ministerial council which convened leaders from several BOTs including the Falklands MLA Roger Edwards, as reported by the island's Royal Gazette.

    Argentine diplomats questioned in Montevideo why the United Kingdom is not punished for its denial to comply with the UN General Assembly Resolution from 1965 which calls on Argentina and the UK to sit and dialogue on the Falklands/Malvinas dispute. They also denied any attempts from Argentina to suffocate the Falklands economy or hydrocarbons industry.

    Falklands/Malvinas special session at Aladi's offices in Montevideo

    Aladi founded in 1980, includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela and Uruguay.

    The Latin American Integration Association, Aladi, with main offices in Montevideo, will be holding on Thursday an extraordinary meeting on the Falklands/Malvinas Islands question in the framework of the recent Day of Affirmation of Argentine rights over the South Atlantic Islands (June 10), and the fiftieth anniversary of UN Assembly Resolution 2065, which called on Argentina and UK to dialogue and find a solution to the dispute.
