  Some thoughts about the 9 November Falklands' general election

  

  By John Fowler - At the time of going to press, so far sixteen brave or foolhardy souls have declared their candidature for the General Election. This is one more than in 2013 and may be the most ever. With an average age of less than fifty years this group is almost certainly the youngest. Gone, it would seem, are the days when only the wealthy, retired, unemployed, or possibly unemployable old were available to stand.

  Falklands welcomes the registry of a new freezer trawler

  

  The Falkland Islands Executive Council this week welcomed the registration of the new Falklands fishing vessel freezer trawler Monteferro belonging to Kalamar Ltd. MLA Mike Summers said: “This is the second major private sector investment in fishing vessels this year, and represents good progress in the industry.”

  Identification of unknown Argentine combatants buried in Falklands advancing according to agenda

  

  The forensic team from the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, involved in the Falklands Humanitarian Project is currently analyzing the DNA samples taken from the Argentine soldiers remains buried at the Darwin cemetery in the Islands, and defining strategies that should allow the delivery of results to the Argentine, and United Kingdom governments.

  Argentine teenagers travel to Falklands in high school graduation trip

  

  Eighteen Argentine high school graduates from a Catholic institution in the port-town of Ensenada, next to La Plata should be arriving in the Falkland Islands this Saturday after connecting with the LATAM flight in Rio Gallegos. The trip was planned and agreed two years ago and since then they have been collecting funds with different activities to make possible a lifetime's dream.

  Bottle with message tossed close to Falklands emerges five years later in New Zealand

  

  Tossed into the sea by a sailor on a yacht in the Atlantic ocean, a message in a bottle drifted across the seas for five years. Some 8000 kilometers later, it washed up on a Northland beach in New Zealand. A couple were walking along the waterfront near their home when the corked wine bottle caught their eye. Inside was a letter thrown into the sea near the Falkland Islands, penned on January 20, 2012.

  Falklands War memorial unveiled in Brecon by ex governor Sir Alan Huckle

  

  The new Falklands War memorial in Brecon, Wales, was officially unveiled on Saturday in the Peace Gardens. The former Governor of the Falkland Islands, Sir Alan Huckle, unveiled the memorial stone while Jock Blair from the Royal British Legion in Brecon unveiled the bench.

  Falklands' iconic Whalebone Arch in Stanley again open to view after weeks of repair

  

  Falkland Islands' newly-restored Whalebone Arch was revealed this week. After six weeks of sanding and repairing and coating with epoxy resin, the iconic structure in Stanley is now open to view, and to the elements.

  Falklands' considering investigation of Stanley Airport future development options

  

  The Falkland Islands' Executive Council has considered a proposal to investigate the future development options for Stanley Airport. A paper put to ExCo by the General Manager Aviation Services and Director of Civil Aviation was described as not a comprehensive review of all the options, but gives approval for the Chief Executive to develop clear terms of reference for a study which can define the realistic potential usage options for Stanley Airport.
