    IAATO members vote to develop an Antarctic conservation plan

    Members of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) have agreed to develop a science based conservation plan for the Antarctic Peninsula in collaboration with the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) to support decision making for tourism management.

    IAATO's 25 years pioneering performance recognized with place-names in Antarctica

    The place-names selected includes a group of islands in the Grandidier Channel named the IAATO Islands

    The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) has been recognized in a recent suite of Antarctic place names made by the United Kingdom.The place-names selected for inclusion in a place-naming theme for the pioneers of safe and environmentally responsible Antarctic tourism, includes a group of islands in the Grandidier Channel named the IAATO Islands, to reflect the organization’s role, over the past 25 years, in advocating and promoting the practice of safe and environmentally-responsible Antarctic tourism.

    Dr. Lisa Kelley, top expert in polar operations, named IAATO's Operations Manager

    Lisa has worked in the polar tourism industry for over 15 years, successfully leading expeditions since 2007 for IAATO member operator, Lindblad Expeditions.

    The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) announced the appointment of Lisa Kelley as Operations Manager. IAATO Executive Director Dr. Kim Crosbie said, “Lisa has a strong background in polar operations and has actively contributed to IAATO for many years.

    Antarctica visitors increase 4.6% in 2015/16; IAATO celebrates 25th anniversary

    American and Australian visitors remained the most numerous, accounting for 35.5% and 11% of the total number of visitors.

    IAATO Executive Director and Falklands' resident awarded the Queen's Polar Medal

    Dr. Kim Crosbie career began in 1991 when she joined the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, as a research student.

    Dr Kim Crosbie, IAATO Executive Director, and IAATO Member Jérôme Poncet of Golden Fleece Expeditions who is a resident of the Falkland Islands, have been awarded the Queen’s Polar Medal. The announcement was made last week in The London Gazette.

    Polar operators keen on conducting citizen science projects

    Kim Crosbie, Executive Director, IAATO, highlighted that after a period of downturn, tourism to Antarctica is recovering and diversifying

    Field staff from the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operations (IAATO) and the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) got together in Toronto last month in the first Polar field staff conference ever held. Seventy-five people attended over the three days representing 24 IAATO/AECO members, three governments, three universities and the World Wildlife Fund.

    South Georgia received record number of visitors during 2014/15 cruise season

    A total of 8,142 cruise ship passengers visited South Georgia last season, slightly more than the previous highest number which was 8,068 in the 2007/8 season. (Pic J. Fowler)

    The island of South Georgia attracted the highest ever number of cruise ship passengers in the 2014/15 season, in contrast to falling numbers of tourists visiting the Antarctic, according to the May edition of the South Georgia Newsletter.
