    Falklands/Malvinas: regional summit to renew request for UN Secretary General good offices in the dispute

    Meeting in Santo Domingo, foreign minister Susana Malcorra thanked the Celac summit once again for the support to Argentina's rights over the Malvinas islands

    Leaders from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, CELAC, expressed full support for Argentina's legitimate rights over the South Atlantic islands (Falklands, South Georgia and South Sandwich) and anticipated they will be requesting the UN Secretary General to renew his good offices for the resumption of negotiations between Argentina and UK to reach a peaceful solution to the dispute.

    Malvinas: Argentina calls on UK for dialogue and sovereignty discussions

    The Argentine people and government “reaffirm their imprescriptible sovereignty rights” over the austral territories and maritime spaces inherited from Spain

    Argentina has invited the United Kingdom to advance with the dialogue initiated last year to resume negotiations to enable in the shortest time possible, to find a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands, abiding the iterative calls from the international community, according to a release from the Argentine foreign ministry.

    Having spent last Antarctic summer celebrating the deeds of one British polar hero, the crew of Royal Navy icebreaker HMS Protector have opened the 2016-17 survey season honoring his rival. A century after Sir Ernest Shackleton landed at King Haakon Bay on South Georgia in a makeshift lifeboat – the James Caird – Protector entered the same fjord and sent her hi-tech survey launch – the James Caird IV – close to the identical spot.

    Convention on Biological Diversity extended to the Falkland Islands

    The United Kingdom ratification to the Convention on Biological Diversity was formally extended to the Falkland Islands on Wednesday (June 29). The CBD is an agreement on environmental management and best practice and originated from the 1992 Rio Conference on environment and development.

    Antarctica visitors increase 4.6% in 2015/16; IAATO celebrates 25th anniversary

    American and Australian visitors remained the most numerous, accounting for 35.5% and 11% of the total number of visitors.

    The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) announced its tourism figures for the 2015-2016 Antarctic season on the first day of its 25th Anniversary Meeting in its home town of Newport, Rhode Island, USA.
