  Falklands' Dictionary of Biographies, from text to a new website

  

  The entire text of the fantastically informative Dictionary of Falklands Biography has been placed on a new website www.falklandsbiographies.org. In addition to the original 476 biographies, six new names have been added and more are to follow. Among the newcomers are Constance Allardyce, the wife of Governor Sir William, who was a respected palaeontologist and expert on Falklands fossils (written by Dr Phil Stone).

  BAS team doing first scientific Southern right whale survey in South Georgia

  

  An international team of researchers, led by British Antarctic Survey (BAS), travels to the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia this month to carry out the first scientific whale survey since whaling stopped in the 1970s.

  Plunge into South Georgia freezing waters to lobby for marine sanctuaries

  

  The United Kingdom government has been urged to create a marine sanctuary around islands in the South Atlantic which are “virtually untouched by humans”. Fully protecting 500,000 square kilometers around the South Sandwich Islands would preserve wildlife including penguins, seals, seabirds and whales, conservationists said.

  New map of South Georgia by British Antarctic Survey unveiled

  

  A team of cartographers at British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has re-produced a high-resolution updated map of the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. The island, situated at 37°W 54°10’S is a haven for wildlife, a centre for wildlife and fisheries research and famous for the epic voyage by Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men just over a century ago.

  HM Commissioner hosts South Georgia stakeholders on 12-day visit

  South Georgia gentoo penguins feed preferably on krill, shows 22 year BAS study

  

  The longest and most comprehensive study to date of what penguins eat is published this month. The study, published in the journal Marine Biology, examines the diets of gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) at Bird Island, South Georgia over a 22 year period and is part of a project investigating the Southern Ocean ecosystem and its response to change

  Malvinas: Argentina calls on UK for dialogue and sovereignty discussions
