    St Helena airport scheduled to receive 80 pax Avro RJ100 to be delivered in Chile

    The Avro RJ100 ((picture) is scheduled to land in St Helena airport on Friday 21 October 2016.

    Planning is underway for an Avro RJ100 jet aircraft, operated by Tronos Jet Maintenance and flown by Atlantic Star Airlines, with final destination Chile, to fly to Ascension Island, followed by a call at St Helena Airport on the same day. Both are technical stops, and the crew will overnight on St Helena.

    St Helena airport “too dangerous to use” opens prospect of £285m compensation claim

    The airport was to be opened last May but test pilots said it was too dangerous to use, and it remains closed to commercial flights.

    Britain faces the prospect of compensation claims over a disastrous overseas aid project to build an airport on the remote island of St Helena, according to reports in the UK media. The £285million flop became a symbol of Britain’s aid waste this year after experts warned it might never open because of severe problems with wind conditions on the British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

    NOAA “flying laboratory” scheduled to circle St Helena Island

    SHG understands that the NOAA aircraft will undertake three circuits over the Island at different altitudes, before heading off to the South West coast of Africa.

    As part of an international study to be able to deliver more accurate weather forecasts across the South Atlantic, a United States NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) “flying laboratory” is planning to operate over St Helena this coming weekend, to undertake a series of weather-related measurements.

    RMS St Helena schedule extended another year until airport is ready for commercial flights

    The extension of the RMS St Helena service also allows the island more flexible planning as it prepares for the introduction of commercial flights to the island.

    RMS St. Helena, one of the last Royal Mail Ships in the world is to continue serving her remote South Atlantic island namesake until 1 July 2017, the St Helena Government has announced. The RMS passenger and freight service will continue to operate between Cape Town, St Helena and Ascension Island with the extended schedule confirmed by the island's director of tourism.

    St Helena's airport opening delayed indefinitely because of wind conditions

     UK's National Audit Office said the delay - due to high winds on the remote island - could add to the cost.

    The opening of an airport on the British overseas territory of St Helena has been delayed indefinitely due to safety fears - amid warnings the cost to the UK government could increase. The £285m airport is being paid for by the Department for International Development and was due to open in May.

    St. Helena airport certified, which brings opening day closer

    St Helena’s first Aerodrome Certificate is valid until 9 November 2016, at which point the Airport will need to be re-certified.

    British Overseas Territory St. Helena achieved a major milestone on Tuesday when Air Safety Support International (ASSI) issued an Aerodrome Certificate to brand new St Helena Airport - having been satisfied that the Airport infrastructure, aviation security measures and air traffic control service complies with international aviation safety and security standards. This follows a final inspection of the Airport by an ASSI team last month.

    St Helena postpones official opening of the new airport

    Last week the Island’s Air Service Provider, Comair, brought a Boeing 737-800 aircraft to St Helena on an ‘Implementation Flight’

    The St. Helena Government confirms that further safety and operational work is required prior to the Official Opening of the Island’s new Airport – and that this event has therefore been postponed. While this means that the Airport will not officially open on 21 May 2016 as originally planned, the safety of aircraft and passengers is of course paramount.(MP, 15 and 19 April).

    Built in UK in 1990 specifically for the St Helena route and with 6,767 gross tons, she can accommodate 156 passengers in 56 cabins, together with a cargo capacity

    Helena Line has announced that it is to withdraw the Passenger Cargo Royal Mail Ship St Helena from service in July 2016 and has appointed London ship broker CW Kellock & Co Ltd to handle her sale.
