  Tierra del Fuego governorship goes for a Cristina Fernandez ally

  

  President Cristina Fernandez Victory Front candidate for Tierra del Fuego Rosana Bertone will be the next governor of the province, after rival Federico Sciurano conceded defeat in the race to succeed Fabiana Ríos. With 70.9% of ballot stations counted Victory Front senator Bertone led with 50.1% of votes compared to 46.52% for Sciurano, from the opposition led coalition.

  Falklands-born Alexander Betts candidate for a Mercosur parliament seat

  

  Alejandro Betts, born in the Falklands and now full Argentine citizen will run for office in the Mercosur Parliament, Parlasur, in representation of the Tierra del Fuego province, although he must first overcome the 9 August PASO primaries (open, simultaneous and mandatory), according to reports from the official Argentine news agency, Telam.

  Run off in Tierra del Fuego governor's election; despite freezing weather, 60% cast ballots

  

  Results from Tierra del Fuego in the extreme south of Argentina put Victory Front senator Rosana Bertone on course for victory in Sunday's governor's election, although she will have to face a run-off with second-placed Federico Sciurano. With 82.8% of the vote counted Bertone led on 41.8%, followed by Sciurano of the radical-Popular Fueguino Movement coalition who took 33.7%.

  Tierra del Fuego's May inflation almost three times the official 1% rate

  

  Tierra del Fuego's Consumer Prices Index, CPI for May was almost three times higher than the Argentine government official index from stats office Indec: 2.7% against 1%. The percentage was provided by Tierra del Fuego's Stats and Census Office, which also shows that in the first five months of the year inflation reached 11.4% and 28% in the last twelve months, well above the 15.3% from Indec.

  Ushuaia expects 2014/15 cruise season to total over 100.000 visitors

  

  Over 100.000 visitors will have landed in Ushuaia, extreme south of Argentina by the end of the current 2014/2015 cruise season, anticipated for mid April, according to official stats from the Tierra del Fuego Tourism Institute, InFueTur.

  Following Falklands' incident Argentine company buys local operations of Japan's Nissui

  

  Newsan, an Argentine firm involved in electronics but also in seafood supply, has reportedly acquired Argentine operations of Japan’s second largest seafood company, Nippon Suisan Kaisha (Nissui). The operation follows an incident involving alleged fishing of the Japanese company in the South Atlantic both in Argentina and Falklands' waters.

  Ushuaia expects 22.000 cruise visitors during January, says local tourist office

  

  Ushuaia, in the extreme south of Argentina is expecting 22.000 cruise visitors during the month of January to which must be added to the 17.000 that already landed in Tierra del Fuego since the current 2014/2015 season officially opened last September, according to the provincial Tourist office.

  BBC team authorized to film wildlife in Tierra del Fuego under certain conditions

  

  A BBC crew is currently filming in Tierra del Fuego a documentary on the wildlife of the Beagle Channel Islands. The crew is escorted by an observer from the provincial government and according to local officials it had to sign a document by which when the material is edited it must clearly establish that it was filmed in Argentine territory, with support from local authorities.
