Argentine financial watchdog claims banks actively collude to take money out of the country

Argentina's head of the Financial Information Unit (UIF) watchdog, José Sbatella has accused major banks of not just participating, but actively organizing operations to move capital out of the country. The official made reference to ongoing cases involving capital flight against worldwide financial powerhouses HSBC, BNP Paribas and JP Morgan, in an interview published in Página 12.

Environmental groups lobbying to derail Shell drilling for oil in the Arctic

Environmental groups and organizations are lobbying to derail Royal Dutch Shell PLC's plan to drill in the Arctic Ocean as soon as July. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, an agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior, gave conditional approval in May to Shell's resumption of fossil fuel exploration in the Arctic, which was paused after a mishap-filled 2012 season.

Punta Arenas fishing industry complains of a sharp fall in catches and landings

US unemployment in May ups to 5.5%, as more people look for jobs

The US economy added 280,000 jobs in May, the US Labor Department has said. The increase was more than analysts had expected and the biggest this year and was described as “encouraging”.
