  Falklands’ conflict erupts as example for current Japan/China clash over disputed islands

  

  Japan’s outspoken Finance minister and Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso said that the Japanese government needs to make it clear that they intend to defend the Senkaku Islands from whatever invading force. This is to avoid what happened to the Falkland Islands when Argentine troops triggered a war with British forces by landing on the disputed islands in 1982.

  Malvinas veteran named coach of one of Argentina’s five most popular soccer teams

  

  Malvinas veteran Omar de Felippe who was part of the defence ring organized by the invading Argentine military to defend occupied Port Stanley in 1982, has been named coach of Independiente, the ‘red devils’ one of the five most popular soccer teams in Argentina, which after a streak of losing games was condemned to a lower league.

  South Georgia releases stamps commemorating former governor Sir Rex Hunt

  

  South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are currently promoting the release of a set of stamps commemorating the life of the former Falklands and dependencies governor Sir Rex Hunt. The release of the stamps on June 11 coincided with a memorial service for Sir Rex Hunt at St Clement Danes, the Central Church of the Royal Air Force, London.

  HMS Argyll sails across the Panama Canal on the last leg of her deployment

  

  South Atlantic patrol HMS Argyll is coming to the end of her seven month deployment and next month is expected back in Davenport. Last week the Type 23 frigate crossed the 80 kilometre Panama Caal sailing two seas in one day, after finishing an intense period of counter-narcotics operation in the Eastern Pacific.
