    Falklands fishing license fees frozen for 2017; possible tax policy review

    Director of Natural Resources John Barton recommended increasing 5% only a few license fees

    The Falkland Islands has decided to hold fee levels across all fishing licenses for 2017 as part of a long term policy focus and in view of certain circumstances emerging from the volatility of annual catches. The Executive Council (ExCo) agreed on the decision by a majority at its last meeting extensive to all license types, including Illex, the Islands main catch.

    Argentine and British diplomats will be meeting next 10 December in Geneva with the Red Cross to advance in the identification of the remains of 123 Argentine combatants buried at Darwin cemetery in the Falkland islands since 1982.

    The new Abbot Allan will support Fr John Wisdom o.praem, the priest who has ministered to the 230 Catholics on the Falklands since August 2015

    The Prefect for the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, Cardinal Fernando Filoni, has appointed Fr Hugh Allan OPraem, Prior of Norbertine Community of St Philip's Priory, Chelmsford, as the new Apostolic Administrator of the Prefecture of the Falkland Islands and Ecclesiastical Superior of the Missions sui iuris of the islands of Ascension, St Helena and Tristan da Cunha ad quinquennium (for a period of five years).

    The Royal Falkland Islands Police Force (RFIP) is celebrating its birthday having been first established on the 1st November 170 years ago in 1846 with the appointment of Mr Francis Parry as Chief Constable. The Constables Ordinance of 1846, which was first enacted by the Colonies Legislative Council on 27th October of that same year, brought about the birth of an establishment that has remained at the service of the public ever since.

    Argentine foreign minister Susana Malcorra thanked countries attending the XXV IberoAmerian summit in Colombia for their support to Argentina's sovereignty claim over the Falklands/Malvinas Islands and the compliance of UN resolutions calling for dialogue with the UK. A brief release from the Argentine ministry said “we are grateful for the support we have received from the IberoAmerican space on the Malvinas question”.

    Falklands celebrating 30 years of the Fishery that transformed the Islands

    The fishing industry accounts for 40% of the Falkland’s Gross Domestic Product, which, said Mr John Barton was “considerable progress in 30 years”.

    The Falklands Islands are recalling a milestone decision for the development and transformation of the economy of the country. On October 29, 1986 a Proclamation declaring the Interim Falklands Conservation and Management Zone was signed by Governor Gordon Jewkes. Director of Natural Resources, John Barton pointed out at a presentation on Wednesday evening to mark 30 years of Falkland Fisheries.

    A youth football squad from the Falkland Islands is currently touring Punta Arenas, competing in a week long tournament against teams from the local area. The Falkland Islands Youth football team is currently in Chile this week training and competing in a week-long tournament against local sides.

    Four Argentines who flew straight across from Rio Gallegos to Stanley airport in a private Beechcraft 55 and spent four days in the Falkland Islands, had only words of praise for the way they were considered and treated during the two months previous paperwork and when they finally reached their goal of visiting battle fields, cemeteries to honor the 1982 combatants who never returned.
