    HMS Protector involved in practicing boarding operations with navies from four countries

    US, Chilean, Mexican, Colombian and UK teams practice boarding ops during Exercise Unitas

    Ice Patrol HMS Protector has provided the perfect training platform during Exercise Unitas, the world's longest-running multinational maritime exercise. Teams from the UK, US, Chile, Mexico and Colombia used the Royal Navy's ice patrol ship for practicing boarding operations, where personnel move between vessels.

    Falklands, confirmed case of avian influenza in Surf Bay, close to Stanley

    Since 30 October 2023, 113 suspect birds/animals have been reported, 72 sets of swabs have been taken. Nineteen have returned positive results and 53 negative results

    The Falkland Islands Director of Natural Resources has released the following, “On Monday 16 September 2024 swabs that were taken from a dead Gentoo penguin on Surf Bay were tested and returned positive for HPAI. Given that this is an isolated case of one single bird, that is more than 1km from poultry or a colony, a level 1 response will be followed and a full protection zone will not be declared.”

    The Falkland Islands have decades of close links with Chile which not only refer to trade, connectivity, shipping, but are mainly because of the long-established Chilean community in the Islands. Currently almost two hundred strong they are the largest from mainland South America and have greatly contributed to the development of the Islands in different fields of expertise, both in Camp and Stanley. And many families in the Islands have Chilean born members or descendants.

    A researcher from the University of Southampton (UK) has found evidence that the treeless, rugged, grassland landscape of the Falkland Islands was home to a lush, diverse rainforest up to 30 million years ago.

    Falklands celebrates decision to hold Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2026

    CGS has received confirmation of support from the Government to enable them to progress with their proposal to host the Games in 2026.

    The Falkland Islands Sports Council celebrated and shared the good news from Scotland on the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Although the Commonwealth Games 2026 Statement refers to Scottish government support and no other details, from the Falklands reaction was most positive, “there is no further news on what sports are included, or the numbers of places we will have……but at least there is a Games.”

    Falklands Tourist Board preparing for this summer's season

    The Jetty Visitor Centre with its Information Office is situated on the corner of Ross Road and Philomel Street and is a first-stop for anyone visiting the Islands

    With the incoming cruise season round the corner the Falkland Islands Tourist Board is actively preparing for what is expected to be a very busy summer. With that in mind the Falklands Tourist Board is inviting any individuals and or businesses involved within the tourism industry to attend a pre-season meeting scheduled for this Wednesday at the Jetty Visitors Center, beginning at 17:00 hours.

    Falkland Islands hold first Liberal Democrat fringe meeting at Brighton Conference

    The Falkland Islands Government held their first fringe meeting at the Liberal Democrat Conference in Brighton on September 15. Members of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly (MLA), Mark Pollard and Leona Roberts, joined a panel with Liberal Democrat Peers, The Lord Purvis of Tweed and Baroness Smith of Newnham, to discuss the topic “The Falkland Islands: Self-determination in the 21st Century.”

    Falklands Fidelis 2 emergency medical evacuation exercise

    The Exercise was an opportunity for the multi-agency team to train and develop skills in a controlled environment in preparation to support the MEDEVAC chain

    Each year there are about 5-7 aero-medical transfers of military and civilian patients from the Falkland Islands to South America onboard fixed wing military airframes stationed at BFSAI.

    Success of Falklands delegation two weeks visit of Uruguay

    The Falkland Islands close relations and bonds with Uruguay were again confirmed this year by the delegation that spent a couple of weeks in the country visiting farms, agriculture research centres, plus promoting trade, tourism, science, education and the wonderful support from the British Hospital in Montevideo caring for our patients.
