    Cubans keep flocking into Uruguay seeking asylum

    Cubans have kept coming in from Brazil in 2021

    The number of Cubans entering Uruguay through the land crossings from Brazil is noticeably on the rise, it was reported Tuesday. According to press reports, so far this year 135 people of that nationality have crossed through the Rivera pass from Santana do Livramento at an average of six individuals daily. Uruguayan Migrations authorities have reported that of the 135 who came in only two went out at a later date. Many of them were carrying the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which added to the migrant services overwhelming.

    A group of 23 Haitian migrants were stranded Sunday at Santiago's Arturo Merino Benítez international airport where they have filed for refugee status but nevertheless fear local authorities might deport them back to their country of origin where all lives are “at-risk” due to the ongoing crisis, according to Rodolfo Noriega of the local Migrant Ombudsman's Office.

    Twenty-two-country members from the Organization of American States, OAS, on Wednesday approved a strong statement condemning the presence of the Iranian official Mohsen Rezai in Nicaragua during the taking office ceremony of president Daniel Ortega. Rezai has been indicted by Argentine Justice for his alleged masterminding of the 1994 attack on the Jewish organization Amia in Buenos Aires killing 85 people and injuring dozens.
