    Euro-skeptic Tories fear real danger of a “dilution of Brexit”; point to Hammond

    Backbenchers criticized Philip Hammond this week for saying changes to UK-EU relations could be “very modest”.

    The UK is heading towards “a dilution of Brexit”, former cabinet minister Theresa Villiers has said. The Conservative MP, writing in the Sunday Telegraph said there was “a real danger” the UK will sign up to an agreement with Brussels which could “keep us in the EU in all but name”. Her comments come amid growing Tory party rifts over Brexit.

    Punta Arenas reaffirms Antarctica links with two private support vessels

    Betanzos will operate as a scientific support vessel, with sophisticated equipment and a reinforced “ice-class” hull, plus accommodation for 64 people.

    Punta Arenas. Chile seems determined to remain as the main calling point for Antarctica scientific and logistics support. This month two private undertakings were inaugurated which confirmed that determination, one of them is the DAP's MV Betanzos a scientific vessel for Antarctica research, and the second in the Antarctic Warrior, belonging to the Petromar company and which has been conditioned to transport supplies and fuel to Antarctica.

    Bomb in Colombia city of Barranquilla kills seven officers, wounds 41

    The bombing in Barranquilla was one of the deadliest on security personnel in recent years, casting a pall over preparations for the annual carnival

    At least seven police officers were killed and 41 others wounded on Saturday when alleged drug traffickers detonated a bomb at a station in the Colombian city of Barranquilla. The attack comes as President Juan Manuel Santos seeks to end the armed conflict that has wracked Colombia for 50 years. Much of the violence has been linked to drug trafficking.

    Falklands' Dictionary of Biographies, from text to a new website

    David Tatham, editor of the printed edition was very grateful to Tom McAdam who volunteered to set up the website with excellent links and very easy to navigate.

    The entire text of the fantastically informative Dictionary of Falklands Biography has been placed on a new website www.falklandsbiographies.org. In addition to the original 476 biographies, six new names have been added and more are to follow. Among the newcomers are Constance Allardyce, the wife of Governor Sir William, who was a respected palaeontologist and expert on Falklands fossils (written by Dr Phil Stone).

    Tillerson's first tour of several Latin American countries in early February

    At the start of his trip Tillerson will outline the Administration’s Western Hemisphere policy priorities in an address at the University of Texas at Austin.

    United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will travel to Austin, Texas, and then to Mexico City, Mexico; Bariloche and Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lima, Perú; Bogotá, Colombia; and Kingston, Jamaica on February 1-7. According to a release from the State Department, Secretary Tillerson will engage with regional partners to promote a safe, prosperous, energy secure, and democratic hemisphere.

    Macri and Macron agree in most issues, but not in the EU/Mercosur talks

    Macri arrived at the Elysée Palace on Friday, late in the evening, and was effusively received by Macron, followed by a meeting of an hour and twenty minutes.

    Argentine president Mauricio Macri ended on Friday his European tour in Paris, where he addressed the business community and potential investors, and later held a private meeting with president Emmanuel Macron. According to Argentine sources there is strong French investors' interest, but apparently Macron held his ground when regarding the EU/Mercosur overall trade agreement.

    Pesquerias Marinenses SA, owner of Playa de Galicia was fined a total of £5,000, plus court costs of £150 on two charges

    A Falkland Islands Summary Court acting Justice of Peace Andrew Brownlee and Leeann Harris handed out a conditional discharge for eighteen months to Spanish fishing captain, Oscar Gomez, while fining his company, Pesquerias Marinenses SA, a total of £5,000, plus court costs of £150. Mr Gomez was also ordered to pay £150 costs.

    Royal Navy received the new Offshore Patrol Vessel HMS Forth

    The 90-metre warship, which successfully completed her maiden sea trials in December, will soon be sailed to Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth

    British Defense Minister Guto Bebb formally announced on Thursday the acceptance of HMS Forth, the Royal Navy’s new Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV), from manufacturer BAE Systems at the company’s Scotstoun shipyard.
