  Brazil’s incumbent candidate Dilma Rousseff took the lead in the country’s presidential race, according to a new poll. Rousseff, President Lula da Silva’s former cabinet chief, is supported by 40% of those surveyed, according to an Ibope poll for the National Industrial Confederation, or CNI, that was published Wednesday in Brasilia.

  US Central bank anticipates low rates for an “extended period”

  

  Two days ahead of the Toronto G-20 summit the US Federal Reserve anticipates it will keep its main interest rate at a near zero level, for an “extended period”. The Federal Open Market Committee said on Wednesday that “subdued inflation” and other factors “are likely to warrant” keeping rates at their historic lows.

  Uruguay concerned with Argentina’s construction of atomic power plant

  

  Uruguay is considering an alleged Argentine violation of the UN Nuclear Security Convention since it was never notified of the construction of the Atucha II atomic power plant, 100 kilometres to the north of the capital Buenos Aires and which is one of the country’s main public works.

  Argentine Lower House votes to sanction companies operating in Falklands

  

  Argentina’s Lower House gave unanimous preliminary approval to a bill that seeks to impose sanctions on corporations operating in Argentina that may be looking to work in the Falkland/Malvinas Islands with out the approval of Argentine authorities. The bill must now be ratified by the Senate.

  A majority of Latinamerican children (63%) live in poverty conditions, claims UN

  

  Almost 63% of Latinamerican and Caribbean children and adolescents suffer some kind of poverty determined by the impairments which affect the full exercise of their rights and the income level of their families, according to a joint report from the United Nations Economic Commission for Latinamerica and Caribbean and the UN Children’s Fund, Cepal and Unicef.

  Spanish Parliament supports Gibraltar’s bunkering operations

  

  The Spanish Parliament voted Tuesday against a proposal urging a ban on the use of floating storage tankers in Gibraltar. The Popular Party motion before the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Commission called on Madrid to ask the British Government to force Gibraltar to store all bunkering fuel on land.
