    Punta Arenas plans to seat a major Antarctica scientific research hub

    Governor Jorge Flies said the objective was for at least 1,000 scientists to settle in the Magellan region capital of Punta Arenas

    Chile will build the International Antarctic Center in the southern city of Punta Arenas, meant to become the entering point to the white continent for the world. The Governor of the Magellan region and the Chilean Antarctic, Jorge Flies stated this week that there were 35 projects developing in his jurisdiction, in three important areas.

    Chile expands Patagonia national parks with Tompkins Foundation donation

    The Tompkins Foundation of one million acres will help form a network of 17 national parks along Patagonia that spans most of Chile.

    Chile set aside 11 million acres of land for national parks aided by the largest private land donation from a private entity to a country. The conservation effort of the Tompkins Foundation helped pave the way for Chile to greatly expand its conservation of the pristine Patagonia wilderness.

    China becomes Chile's leading wine market ahead of United States

    Chile's annual resources' report shows nine fisheries are depleted or collapsed

    The latest annual report from Chile's Fisheries administration, “Public Account of Resources Status 2016” indicates that of the 43 existing fisheries, 25 have biological reference points (PBR) which means a precautionary approach. The presentation was made by Paolo Trejo, Under Secretary for Fisheries and Aquaculture.

    Massive protests in Chilean cities against the private pension scheme

    Implemented under Pinochet, (under World Bank guidelines), AFPs has now amassed close to 160 billion dollars in assets

    Close to 350,000 people in Chile’s capital Santiago and a further two million nationwide took part on Sunday in street protests demanding the replacement of a private pension system imposed under the Pinochet regime, following recommendations from multilateral organisms. The protesters main demand is the elimination of the current pension system, the privately run AFPs (Pension Fund Administrators).

    The end of the 43-day strike came on the day it broke the record for the longest mining strike in copper-rich Chile's history.

    Workers at the world's largest copper mine, BHP Billiton's Escondida in Chile, ended a lengthy strike Thursday that had caused turbulence on global copper markets. But the company warned they had only made matters worse by pushing negotiations back another year and a half.

    Torrential rains and mudslides leave 4 million people in Santiago with no drinking water

    The torrential rain that started Saturday prompted mudslides and rubble to surge into the Maipo river which supplies most homes in the capital.

    Just two weeks ago Chile was desperately combating with foreign support thousands of acres of bushfires out of control, but now over the weekend rainstorms and landslides killed four and contaminated a major river, forcing authorities to cut off drinking water to four million people in the capital Santiago, authorities said.

    A team or Argentine and Chilean experts have visited Czech and British bases in Antarctica as part of the routine inspection of environment and security operations, in the framework of the Antarctic Treaty. The Argentine foreign ministry reported that the inspections took place for the second consecutive year between 19 January and 25 February.
