    Falklands' SAERI lead in Ascension Island tropical marine research

    The Journal of Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom (*) has this month released a special issue focussing on Ascension Island’s marine biodiversity. Falklands' based SAERI Director Dr Paul Brickle explained that 20 papers reported on the results of 202 sampling events, comprising a mixture of quantitative SCUBA surveys involving belt transects for fish and mobile fauna and quadrat photography for sessile fauna.

    Falklands' second Loligo season very promising but by-catch of fur seals forces an exclusion zone

    “During the first ten days of the fishery, about 8,500 tons of Loligo was caught, which equates to an average of 57 tons per vessel per fishing day.”

    The Falkland Islands second Loligo squid season has taken with very good catches, but good catches also means abundance of the cephalopodus, and... of those sea mammals that feed on them. Because of this a temporary exclusion zone around Beauchene Island was put in place on Thursday making this productive area for Loligo squid out of bounds to fishing vessels.

    Falklands' hosts Montserrat top official as part of UK's Territory to Territory Partnership

    A leading Montserrat official is visiting the Falkland Islands for a week as part of a Territory to Territory partnership initiative between the two islands that was initiated last year. The Caribbean island British Overseas Territory Minister of Agriculture, Trade, Lands, Housing, and Environment, Claude E.S. Hogan arrived on the Falklands on the 7th August 2017.

     Team of 14 specialists – from Argentina, Australia, Chile, Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom – exhumed, analysed, sampled and documented the remains of each of the unidentified soldiers.

    Hammond begins round of trade and political talks in Argentina

    Hammond is scheduled to meet ministers of economy, finance, foreign affairs, and with president Mauricio Macri

    The Chancellor of the Exchequer begins on Wednesday a round of trade, investment and political contacts in Argentina, following a two day visit to Brazil, as part of a tour of South America's biggest economy. It will be the most important visit of a British cabinet minister in over sixteen years to Argentina.

    The important publication achieves the Government’s Islands Plan object to improve access to the law, and reflects a vital commitment to uphold the rule of law

    The Falkland Islands Government has announced the on-line publication of the laws of the Falkland Islands. A public demonstration of the on-line Statute Law Database will take place in Stanley at the Court and Council Chamber at 5.30pm on Wednesday 2 August 2017. Members of the public may also access a paper copy of the Statute Law Database through the public library.

    Hammond arrives in Argentina on trade mission; scheduled to meet Macri

    Hammond is scheduled to meet president Mauricio Macri, Economy minister Nicolas Dujovne, Finance minister Luis Caputo and foreign minister Jorge Faurie.

    Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond is scheduled to arrive in Buenos Aires Tuesday evening following a two day business promotion visit to Brazil. It will be the first time a leading UK cabinet minister sets foot in Argentina in sixteen years; the last was when ex Prime Minister Tony Blair met ex president Fernando De la Rua in the Iguazu falls in 2001.

    Falklands' fishing fleet has a female officer, Manuela Mendez

    Manuela is the 2nd Mate of the trawler New Polar catching Loligo, and has a wide-ranging role, contributing to many aspects of running the ship

    Manuela Mendez from the port of Corme, in Galicia, north-west Spain, is believed to be the first female officer in the Falklands' fishing fleet. The Second Mate arrived in Stanley harbor this week. After five years training in merchant shipping and a year on board another fishing vessel, Ms. Mendez joined the crew of Falkland’s trawler, New Polar, last year and is making her second trip to Falklands’ waters.
