
With support from a Royal Navy patrol, the Royal Air Force Search and Rescue helicopters and Falkland Islands emergency services, hundreds of passengers have been rescued from the French flagged mega yacht Le Boréal after it issued a distress call on Wednesday early morning to the north of the Falkland Islands.

Following requests from a number of members of the public to assess the possibility of assisting with the European refugee crisis, the Falkland Islands government, FIG, has reviewed with HMG the options to take part in their resettlement scheme.

The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, met on Monday with representatives of the authorities of the United Kingdom and of the Falkland Islands to discuss a process seeking to identify the remains of a number of unidentified Argentine soldiers buried at Darwin cemetery in Falklands/Malvinas Islands.

Three Falkland Islands sports clubs benefitted from the generosity of local business Argos Ltd with a donation of £25,000 via the Overseas Games Association (FIOGA).

“If any identification is to take place of combatants buried in the Falkland Islands, it would have to be done with the full agreement and involvement of the Falkland Islands Government”, said the local government in a Monday release from Stanley.

The president of the UN Decolonization Special Committee (C24), Xavier Lasso Mendoza argued that the Falklands/Malvinas issue is a territorial integrity and sovereignty dispute between two countries, and since there is no subjugated people in the Islands, if a visiting mission is to be sent, it would have to be to Buenos Aires and London, with the simple message, ”when are you going to sit and begin negotiations?

The United Nations Decolonization Committee approved on Thursday a new resolution urging the United Kingdom to discuss the Falklands/Malvinas dispute with Argentina, in order to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. The decision came as no surprise since it has become an annual event despite Falklands' representatives demand for C24 to act in support of Non Self Governing Territories.
