New Zealand bans new offshore exploration and targets a clean energy future

The decision under Labour Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is a change in direction after nine years of conservative leadership which favored expanding the industry.

Permits for offshore oil and gas exploration will no longer be issued by the New Zealand Government as part of its commitment to a clean energy future. The move will not affect existing permits for exploration or extraction, meaning the industry is likely to continue in the nation for several more decades.

Australian trade minister Steven Ciobo asked: why would we accept a proposition that would see a decline in the quota available because of the Brexit decision?”

Australia has criticized UK's post-Brexit trade plans to split quotas of food imports from around the world. EU rules allow for a certain amount of goods to be brought in from countries outside of the Union without charging full tariffs, but after Brexit, the UK and EU want to split these quotas, based on where the goods are mostly consumed.

Some 8000 kilometers later, it washed up on a Northland beach in New Zealand. A couple were walking along the waterfront near their home when the corked wine bottle caught their eye. Inside was a letter thrown into the sea near the Falkland Islands, penned on January 20, 2012.
