Total contracts Maersk drillship to spud well offshore Uruguay next March

Maersk Drilling has been awarded a contract for the drillship Maersk Venturer with oil major France's Total. The contract covers one exploration well (estimated duration 120 days) in block 14 offshore Uruguay.

Argentina will have a state of the art fisheries research vessel in 2017

Argentina's Fisheries Research and Development Institute, INIDEP, has signed the contract for the construction of a new fisheries and oceanographic research vessel to be built at the Armon shipyard in Vigo, Spain. The financing for the vessel and refurbishing of INIDEP's offices and labs comes from the Inter-American Development bank with a 30m dollars loan.

Francis non papal message to Macri: 'a simple matter of protocol'

How come the Argentine born pope Francis did not send a congratulation telegram, or formal message to president elect Mauricio Macri on his victory, has been an ongoing question. But Vatican sources pointed out there was no special reason for that attitude, but merely “a simple matter of protocol”.

British bombers take off from Cyprus after parliament vote on Syria

Largest whale stranding, 337 Sei specimens, reported in extreme south Chile

A total of 337 sei whales have been found beached in the extreme south of Chile in what scientists state is one of the biggest whale stranding ever recorded. Biologist Vreni Häussermann made the discovery along with other scientists in June during an observation flight over fjords in Chile's southern Patagonia region.

Brazilian economy contracts a record 4.5% in the last twelve months

Brazil's economy, in recession since mid-year, contracted 1.7% in the third quarter, compared to the April-June period, and decreased 4.5% relative to the same period in 2014, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, or IBGE, said on Tuesday.
