    Argentina contracts 2D seismic survey in deep waters covering 435,000 sq km

    Spectrum said data is being acquired with a 12,000 m streamer with continuous recording to enable extended recording lengths and high fold data

    Norway's Spectrum has started a 35,000 km multi-client 2D seismic survey covering 435,000 km2 in the deep waters of Argentina in cooperation with YPF. The survey will provide industry with the first ever detailed seismic grid over this under-explored frontier area of Argentina, allowing for basin-wide studies of the area as well as prospect/lead level interpretation studies for upcoming license rounds.

    Petrobras reveals Libra field achieves a breakeven price of US$ 35/bbl

    The Libra consortium aimed to reduce the breakeven price by focusing on cost optimization and increased recovery factor of the block’s deposits.

    Brazil's oil and gas company Petrobras shared innovations and efficiency gains related to the Libra field at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston. Petrobras revealed collaboration between Libra area partners has produced a US$13/bbl reduction to the project's breakeven price.

    US Supreme Court rules in favor of Venezuela in dispute with US oil drilling company

    Writing for the court, Justice Stephen Breyer said the U.S. Court of Appeals used the wrong standard in denying Venezuela immunity from the lawsuit.

    The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday tossed out a lower court's ruling that had allowed a US oil drilling company to sue Venezuela over the seizure of 11 drilling rigs in 2010 but allowed the business another chance to press its claims.

    ExxonMobil betting heavily in developing Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale gas

    ExxonMobil is planning to speed up investment plans for shale gas drilling in Argentina’s prized Vaca Muerta formation in the Neuquen province. Exxon will start drilling Vaca Muerta in May, by drilling horizontal wells with laterals of 2,500-3,000 meters, Neuquen province governor Omar Gutierrez said this week.

    Russian shipping conglomerate suing Venezuela's oil giant PDVSA for unpaid fees

    Despite a longstanding alliance between Venezuela and Russia, Sovcomflot sued PDVSA in St. Maarten, a Dutch island on the northeast end of the Caribbean.

    Venezuela's state-run oil company, PDVSA, sent a tanker in October to the Caribbean with the expectation that its cargo of crude would fetch about US$20 million - money the crisis-stricken nation desperately needs. Instead, the owner of the tanker, the Russian state-owned shipping conglomerate Sovcomflot, held the oil in hopes of collecting partial payment on US$30 million that it says PDVSA owes for unpaid shipping fees.

    Argentina's state-run oil company YPF is among the bidders for Royal Dutch Shell Plc's refinery and network of gasoline stations in Argentina. Other nationally owned oil companies are interested in the assets but YPF is seen as having an edge because of its strong position in Argentina, the reliable industry sources said.

    Brazil rapidly becoming global supplier of light crudes

    Petrobras Guilherme said company's production ”consists of much lighter oil than we used to produce in the past; we have demand for more than we can deliver.”

    Brazil is poised to sharply increase oil exports this year as heavy investments spur new output and demand for its lighter crudes win more buyers, especially in China and India. Production is projected to rise 210,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2017, second only in the size of additional supply to the United States among non-OPEC producers.
