  South Georgia Stamp Release: 3D Grytviken

  

  A new stamp issue, which gives audiences a new perspective on Grytviken, was released in May, reports the latest edition of the South Georgia Newsletter. A hundred years ago, commercial whaling came to South Georgia. Carl Larsen pioneered shore-based facilities to process their catch.

  Falklands' Caracara “Louie” prank: it again escapes from London Zoo, but two days later was back

  

  A bird of prey, a caracara from the Falkland Islands escaped London Zoo for the second time in 18 months on Sunday, soaring out of the grounds during a meet the animals show for families. The striated caracara named “Louie”, sparked a search of nearby Regent’s Park which left picnickers stunned by the sight of zookeepers waving around a dead rat on a stick in an attempt to coax it back.

  Buenos Aires ceremony to recall Malvinas rights Affirmation Day

  

  Argentina commemorated on Monday in downtown Buenos Aires the Day of the Affirmation of Argentine rights over the Malvinas and South Atlantic Islands in a ceremony to honor the former combatants of the 1982 South Atlantic conflict.

  Falklands: another Argentine combatant remains identified

  

  Another Argentine combatant fallen during the 1982 South Atlantic conflict and buried in the Falkland Islands, has been identified, which brings the number of those still without a name to nine out of a total of 122 graves.

  Argentina recalls the Day of Affirmation of its Rights over the South Atlantic Islands

  

  Argentina recalled on Monday, 10 June, a new anniversary of the creation in 1829 of the “Political and Military command headquarters of the Malvinas Islands and adjacencies to Cape Horn in the Atlantic Sea”, and which has been incorporated to the official calendar as the Day of Affirmation of Argentine Rights over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and its surrounding maritime spaces.

  Falklands' delegation in UK meets oil representatives, trade partners, ministers and MPs

  

  Members of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly along with the Chief Executive Barry Rowland visited the UK in mid-May to undertake a number of meetings with the oil industry, trade partners, Government officials, ministers, and parliamentarians.

  South Georgia Marine Protected Area enhancement, announced last December, comes into effect

  

  Following an announcement in December 2018, a suite of enhancements to the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands Marine Protected Area (SGSSI-MPA) have now been signed into legislation by HM Commissioner Nigel Phillips CBE. The enhanced measures are designed to further conserve the rich biodiversity found within the ocean surrounding this sub-Antarctic UK overseas territory. The new measures build on the existing MPA designated in 2012 and are based on scientific evidence considered during the first 5-year review of the MPA.

  Falklands: World Chess Federation rejects using the game for political purposes

  

  The Argentine Chess Federation’s attempt to get legal recognition of their secret tournaments, held in the Falklands, have been denied. This was expressed in a statement from FIDE, the World Chess Federation, which also urged all federations to refrain from using chess tournaments for political purposes.

  Falklands announces Liberation Day 2019 anniversary program

  

  To mark the Anniversary of the Liberation of the Falkland Islands from Argentinean occupation in 1982, the following program has been arranged for Friday 14 June 2019. A thanksgiving service will be held in Christ Church Cathedral commencing at 9.45am.
