    Falklands hopes complete clearance of minefields will be completed at the end of the decade

    MLA Michael Poole provided a summary of the current and planned demining work, plus the post-clearance management plan, during a briefing of his portfolio

    The Falkland Islands hope that the complete clearance of the minefields, a legacy of the 1982 Argentine military invasion, can be finalized by the end of the decade and in the meantime it is actively considering post-clearance management of those sites that are released, particularly in the area surrounding the capital Stanley.

    Falklands and seven BOT's at House of Lords' EU committee to discuss Brexit

    Falklands will be represented by MLA Roger Edwards. Falklands is highly dependent on the EU for its fish exports with direct access to that market

    The House of Lords EU Committee will next week take evidence from representatives of eight of the British Overseas Territories as its scrutiny of the impact of Brexit continues. Among the territories taking part in the session and giving evidence to the committee will be Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Falkland Islands, Montserrat and St Helena.

    Under Kirchnerism the Air Force lost more aircraft than in the Falklands' war

    Martinez revealed that on taking office he was informed that during the Falklands' conflict Argentina lost 72 aircraft, but “under Kirchnerism over a hundred planes”

    Argentine defense minister Julio Martinez criticized the previous government policies towards the Armed Forces saying that during the Falklands/Malvinas conflict the country lost 72 aircraft, but under the administrations of Nestor and Cristina Kirchner over a hundred went out of service or were decommissioned.

    The plight of Ascension Island residents cut off from the Falklands' Airbridge

    The island, which covers around 45 square miles just south of the equator, is formed by around 40 volcanic peaks.

    Ascension Island, home to around 800 people, is even more cut off than it used to be after weekly flights linking the island to the UK were stopped - due to a dodgy runway and the wrong kind of RAF aircraft, according to a BBC report. The British overseas territory is the tip of an old volcano in the Atlantic Ocean, mid-way between Africa and Brazil. It's so remote, that when the Portuguese discovered it on Ascension Day in 1501, they didn't even bother colonizing it.

    Falkland Islands: Tourists spending more shows survey

    Arrivals figures were almost identical to the previous season, with over 55,000 cruise visitors and just over 1,400 land based leisure tourists.

    Visitor expenditure in the Falklands increased from both land-based tourists and cruise passengers last season. With all the figures from Immigration now in, and the cruise and air surveys analysed, the Tourist Board has a good picture of how last season performed they told Penguin News.
