    Pacific Alliance members invite Uruguay to sign free trade agreements

    Uruguay has been invited by Colombia and Peru to conform a free trade area and update and improve the current treaty with Mexico, Nin Novoa revealed

    Uruguay, a founding member of Mercosur has been invited by Pacific Alliance members Colombia and Peru to update and expand commercial agreements with the two countries and turn them into a free trade treaty, foreign minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa revealed during a hearing in Congress to analyze the current situation in Mercosur.

    Brazilian Senate votes to impeach Rousseff, and Temer could cease to be “interim” president

    The Senate needed just a simple majority to decide on taking Rousseff to trial, but a two-thirds majority will be needed in the final vote, after the trial in late August.

    Brazilian Senate has voted to begin the impeachment trial of embattled President Dilma Rousseff, a move that could officially hand over power to her former vice president – current interim president – Michel Temer. The impeachment trial is expected to open around August 25 - four days after the Olympics finish - and go on for five days, ending with a vote in judgment.

    Venezuela as Mercosur full member faces deadline: Friday 12 August

    “We´re waiting to see what happens this Friday, deadline for Venezuela to show it has complied with conditions to enjoy full membership of Mercosur”, said Loizaga

    Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina are waiting for a report on Venezuela´s compliance with the accords agreed in 2012, which has to delivered next Friday 12 August, and could lead the group of three counties deciding the suspension of Caracas as full member of Mercosur. A week and a half later, 23 August, representatives of these countries will be meeting to address the issue.

    Falklands 2014 and 2015 business climate surveys “very good”, but 2016 prospects aren't so rosy

    The Business Climate Survey is undertaken by the Falklands Islands Development Corporation, FIDC, with support from the Falklands Chamber of Commerce

    The Falklands Business Climate Survey strongly suggests that 2014 and 2015 were two very good years for the Islands economy and its business community, which translated in profits and higher levels of turnover, particularly 2015. However survey respondents predictions for this year and onwards aren't as rosy with many businesses anticipating lower turnover and investments, but not necessarily profits, while the overall average rating for the Islands' economy weighed between “average” and “good”.

    With just a month to go until Uruguay's main agro show, Expo Prado, the British Embassy in Montevideo announces that for the third consecutive year it will be present with a Great Pavilion focused on business, education, culture, tourism, gastronomy and entertainment.     Venezuela to be “demoted” from full Mercosur membership on 12 August

    Michel Temer met last Friday at Itamaraty with Argentina's Macri, Paraguay's Cartes and advisors to assess the current situation of the Mercosur presidency

    Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil are considering the “demotion” of Venezuela's Mercosur full membership unless by next August 12 it complies with all conditions to hold such a position, according to the Brazilian media following a meeting of the three presidents in the sidelines of the opening of the Rio Olympic Games.

    Venezuela announced it will not allow Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, “the triple alliance” to storm the Mercosur pro tempore presidency, which the government of president Nicolas Maduro is fully exercising. Caracas also claimed that economic forces operating in the dark are interested in a Mercosur “implosion”.

    Mercosur founding members agree to disagree, but will hold another round of talks

    “It was an extremely cordial meeting but we did not reach a consensus on Mercosur presidency, which remains vacant and is a priority” said Rigoberto Gauto

    Mercosur founding members coordinators who met in Montevideo on Thursday to address the controversy over the presidency of the group and the self proclamation to the post by Venezuela, did finally reach some conclusions, but the most significant seems to be that they continue to disagree on the steps to follow and are prepared for another round of talks.

    Venezuela defies Mercosur members and announces it will “fully exercise the presidency”

    “We are presidents of Mercosur and will fully exercise that right” said Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro in a mandatory national television message

    Venezuela has defiantly confirmed that is will fully exercise the “self-proclaimed” presidency of Mercosur, despite the opposition from Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, who consider the chair vacant and are meeting in Montevideo to find an alternative for the six month mandate.
