  US opens its market to Argentine fresh beef imports; lemons still pending

  

  Argentina announced that the United States APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) has allowed fresh beef imports from Argentina, lifting a 15-year ban which Buenos Aires had always considered 'unjustified' and bluntly 'protectionist' and as such had claimed before the WTO. In the same vein Argentina also anticipated it expected a similar decision from the US regarding Argentine lemons.

  Canadian tobacco companies ordered to pay 12bn dollars for failing to warn health risks

  

  A Canadian court has ordered three tobacco companies to pay 15.5bn Canadian dollars ($12bn), the largest award for damages in the country's history. The plaintiffs were Quebec smokers who said the firms failed to warn them of health risks associated with smoking.

  The entire Great Lakes, shared by Canada and the United States is at 88.8% ice coverage, with the highest totals coming from Lake Huron and Lake Erie at about 96% ice coverage according to Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, part of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA.

  Canada identifies origin of mad cow disease case; Korea bans Canadian beef

  

  The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association says a beef breeding cow found with mad cow disease on an Alberta farm was born in the province at a different farm. Association spokesman John Masswohl says the Canadian Food Inspection Agency identified the birth farm. It is the first case reported since 2011. South Korea announced it was banning Canadian beef.

  Peruvian president Humala honoured as “Statesman of the Year” in Canada

  

  Peruvian President Ollanta Humala at the end of his three day visit to Canada was honoured in Toronto by the Canadian Council of the Americas with the “Statesman of the Year” annual award. On thanking the award President Humala said that Peru during this year is expected to expand over 5.5% while investment is set to increase by 8%.
