    Argentine and Chilean navies in Beagle channel joint sea and air exercise

    “After 15 years of this exercise which means 'confidence' between our navies, the purpose is greater combined operation capability” said captain Galeazzi.

    Argentina and Chile are holding their annual joint naval exercise in the Beagle channel, in the framework of the 1984 Friendship Treaty, to test their combined sea an air capabilities in the region. This includes emergency and humanitarian situations; maritime traffic control as well as search and rescue operations, operating from Puerto Williams in Chile.

    State of emergency in north of Chile because of torrential rain and floods

    “Some people lost all their belongings, others have been left in very complex situations,” the president said in the city of Tocopilla.

    A state of emergency has been declared by the Chilean government in the northern cities of Antofagasta and Tocopilla due to the strong winds, heavy rains, flashfloods and mudslides. President Michelle Bachelet visited the north on Monday to observe first-hand the damage caused by a storm that left six people dead nationwide.

    Chile's inflation climbs 0.4% in July to an annualized 4.6%; Peso slides 11%

    Chile which is heavily China-dependent with copper exports is suffering consequences of the slowdown in the world's second strongest economy.

    Chile’s inflation rate rose to the highest this year in July as the Peso approaches its weakest level in more than a decade. Prices climbed 0.4% in the month, the National Statistics Institute said on its website Friday. Annual inflation accelerated to 4.6% from 4.4% the month before, while the central bank target is between 2% and 4%.
