  Falklands' main import trading partner is the UK with 87% of all goods

  

  The United Kingdom is the main import trading partner of the Falkland Islands with 87% of all imported goods coming from the UK in 2012 (Customs and Immigration 2013) with the rest imported mostly from Chile and Uruguay, according to the latest report on the Falklands' “State of the Economy”.

  Peru to withdraw ambassador from Chile because of alleged military espionage

  

  Peru said it was withdrawing its ambassador from Chile, amid an intensifying diplomatic spat that was sparked by accusations of military espionage. The Peruvian government is prosecuting two non-commissioned officers in its navy and investigating a third for allegedly spying for neighboring Chile.

  Chilean researchers invited to UK sponsored Engineering innovation program

  

  The United Kingdom Newton-Picarte Fund supported Chilean researchers to participate in the Royal Academy of Engineering's innovation program. Under the Leaders Innovation Fellowships scheme, 15 Chilean researchers, who are already VIU CONICYT grant receivers, travelled to London and Oxford to attend a 10 day residential program.

  Argentina/Chile celebrate Tierra del Fuego mines-free; Rossi claims UK impedes mine-clearance in Falklands

  

  Argentina and Chile defense ministers, Agustín Rossi and Jorge Burgos, attended this week a historic ceremony in which they signed a document declaring Tierra del Fuego free of anti-personal mines. During the meeting minister Rossi blamed the UK for not allowing Argentina to clear the mines in the Falklands/Malvinas Islands.

  Bachelet visits 14-year-old girl who pled for euthanasia since she is suffering cystic fibrosis

  

  Chile’s president went to a hospital on Saturday to meet with a 14-year-old girl who shocked the country by going on YouTube to plead for the leader to let doctors euthanize her because she is tired of her struggle with cystic fibrosis. The government quickly said no after the video began spreading on social media Thursday.

  Chilean lawmakers ask Pope to reverse bishop appointment due to sexual abuse allegations

  

  Fifty-one members of the Chilean Parliament have signed a letter asking Pope Francis to reverse the appointment of the Bishop of Osorno, Juan Barros, due to allegations of covering up sexual abuse.
