    Falklands introduces significant restrictions on constitutional rights and movements for twelve months

    ExCo agreed to health service indemnification – providing a safety net in relation to any claims made against healthcare workers as a result of COVID-19.

    The Falkland Islands Executive Council considered this week two reports regarding further legislative proposals responding to the challenges posed by COVID-19. ExCo addressed the provisions put in place in the UK, including the Coronavirus Act 2020, and other laws.

    Falklands 2017/18 budget had an operating surplus of £38 million

    MLA Roger Spink says a great deal of effort has been taken to more accurately forecast the Falklands' income in the 2018/19 year

    The Falkland Islands Government operating surplus of £38 million for 2017/18 was driven primarily by favourable Corporation Tax receipts. The original budgeted deficit in my view led the former Legislative Assembly to be over cautious in their demands leading to unnecessary thrift in some areas, according to MLA Roger Spink, who is head of the Government Services Portfolio of the Assembly.

    Falklands Liberation Anniversary: Thursday 14 June program

    At 11.00 am a ceremony will be held at the Liberation Monument in front of the Secretariat building.

    To mark the Anniversary of the Liberation of the Falkland Islands from Argentine occupation in 1982, the following program has been arranged for Thursday 14 June 2018, in the capital Stanley, according to a release from Gilbert House, seat of the Falklands elected government.

    Falklands caught in the post Brexit Galileo space controversy

    Michael Barnier, Brussels chief Brexit negotiator, triggered the controversy when he argued UK companies should be excluded from the Galileo project

    United Kingdom ministers are unilaterally considering stopping EU access to the Galileo satellite earth station in the Falklands and Ascension, according to reports in the UK press. The move comes after Brussels chief Brexit negotiator, Michael Barnier, stated that UK companies would have to be excluded from the development of sensitive Galileo infrastructure following Brexit due to security concerns.

    Falklands' parade on 21st April to celebrate Queen's birthday

    The Parade will include a 21 gun salute and a fly past, and will be followed by a march past at which Governor Phillips CBE, will take the Royal Salute.

    The Falkland Islands will be holding a parade to celebrate the birthday of the Queen at Victory Green on Saturday 21st April 2018. The parade will form up at Victory Green at 10.20 hours and Governor Nigel Phillips CBE will arrive at 10.30 hours.

    Falklands plans fishing talks with Argentina after more than a decade

     Barton: “Dialogue with Argentina on the conservation of shared marine resources has the potential to allow for better management of shared fish stocks”

    Exchanges of information between the Falkland Islands and Argentina about fish and squid stocks could begin again before the middle of this year, if all parties are in agreement. Director of Natural Resources John Barton said: “Dialogue with Argentina on the conservation of shared marine resources has the potential to allow for better management of shared fish stocks and improve sustainability of such stocks.”

    Anniversary of the Battle of the Falkland Islands

    The Falklands Battle Memorial in Stanley where the commemoration will take place on Friday

    Gilbert House, seat of the Falkland Islands elected government announced the following program for Friday 8th December 2017 to commemorate the victory of the Naval engagements of 8th December 1914, on which day 6 British sailors lost their lives and a number of others died later from injuries received during the battle. 2,260 German sailors also lost their lives.

    Some thoughts about the 9 November Falklands' general election

     Despite Argentine government assertions to the contrary, long gone are the old colonial days when the Governor could nominate members of council

    By John Fowler - At the time of going to press, so far sixteen brave or foolhardy souls have declared their candidature for the General Election. This is one more than in 2013 and may be the most ever. With an average age of less than fifty years this group is almost certainly the youngest. Gone, it would seem, are the days when only the wealthy, retired, unemployed, or possibly unemployable old were available to stand.
