    Some thoughts about the 9 November Falklands' general election

     Despite Argentine government assertions to the contrary, long gone are the old colonial days when the Governor could nominate members of council

    By John Fowler - At the time of going to press, so far sixteen brave or foolhardy souls have declared their candidature for the General Election. This is one more than in 2013 and may be the most ever. With an average age of less than fifty years this group is almost certainly the youngest. Gone, it would seem, are the days when only the wealthy, retired, unemployed, or possibly unemployable old were available to stand.

    Falklands' preparations and registration for November 9 General Election

    The proposed closing date for candidates nominations is at 4:15pm on October 20, 2017.

    The Falkland Islands General Election is planned to take place on the November 9, “and the Registrar General has the necessary preparations in hand,” announced Member of Legislative Assembly Michael Poole at Thursday’s meeting of Legislative Assembly.

    Falklands will continue to engage with UK and negotiate to retain trade access benefits

    “Once complete, and alongside other Overseas Territories, we will continue to engage with the UK Government regarding the exit process” said Gilbert House.

    The Falkland Islands Government said on Friday it will be working with the public and private sector to further investigate the impact of Brexit on the Islands.

    Falkland Islands remains hopeful of improved relations with the new administration of Argentina and cooperation in the many areas of mutual interest such as fisheries and connectivity, but sovereignty of the Falklands is not for negotiation, reads the Gilbert House report to the 46th British Isles and Mediterranean Region Conference, which opened on Sunday in Jersey.

    Falklands' Queen's Birthday Parade to take place on Thursday 21st April

    The Parade will proceed along the usual lines, and will be followed by a march past at which His Excellency the Governor will take the Royal Salute.

    The Falkland Islands elected government has announced details of the parade to celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty the Queen to be held at Stanley's Victory Green on Thursday 21st April 2016. The parade will form up at Victory Green at 10.20 hours and His Excellency the Governor will arrive at 10.30 hours.

    Falklands celebrates “Tussac Tuesday”, one of the most valuable native plants

    In rare coincidence with the International Women´s Day, the Falkland Islands celebrated ”Tussac Tuesday'', the Poa flabellata grass, one of the most valuable native plants to farmers and wildlife in the Islands. It is palatable all year round and can provide good supplementary forage for cattle, horses and sheep.

    Falklands announces program to mark liberation anniversary from Argentine occupation

    At 11.00 am a ceremony will be held at the Liberation Monument, and after  prayers Governor Colin Roberts will lay a wreath.

    The Falkland Islands will be marking the anniversary of the liberation of the Islands from Argentine occupation with a vast program scheduled for Sunday 14, June, 2015, in the capital Stanley.<
    The program includes a religious service, a ceremony at Liberation Monument and later a reception hosted by Falkland Islands governor Colin Roberts. MLA Ian Hansen will be presented with the South Atlantic Medal on behalf of all Islanders.

    Falklands will celebrate Queen's birthday parade April 21st

    Also in attendance will be representatives of the Legislative Assembly and the Falkland Islands Government. There will be a fly-past at approximately 10.45.

    On Tuesday 21 April the Falkland Islands will be holding a parade to celebrate the birthday of Queen Elizabeth. Contingents from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force and the Falklands' Defense Force will form at Stanley's Victory Green, reports Gilbert House, seat of the Falklands' elected Legislative Assembly.

    Falklands Battle Centenary Memorial Wall unveiling and Act of Remembrance

    A parade led by the Band of Royal Marines Plymouth will march to the Battle Memorial for the Act of Remembrance and later several wreaths will be laid

    Gilbert House, seat of the Falkland Islands elected government has released the program arranged for Monday 8th December 2014 to commemorate the victory of the Naval engagements of 8th December 1914, on which day 6 British sailors lost their lives and a number of others died later from injuries received during the battle. 2,260 German sailors also lost their lives.
