    OAS hosts seminar on “Connectivity and Freedom of Expression in the Americas”

    The event will be inaugurated by OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, at the organization's headquarters in Washington

    Experts, academics and authorities on connectivity and freedom of expression in the Americas will meet Thursday at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC to discuss and share experiences about optimal regulatory policies to create a universal telecommunication connectivity environment that helps strengthen the exercise of freedom of expression and of the press in the region.

    OAS summit in Peru will address democratic governance and corruption

    Peru's delegate Ana Rosa Valdivieso, appreciated the support from OAS for the organization of the Summit and the relevance of the topic chosen by her country.

    The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Peru signed the agreement on preparations for the Eighth Summit of the Americas, which will bring together all heads of state and government of the Hemisphere in April 2018, in Lima.

    Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez announced the decision to withdraw from the OAS after a brief but contentious meeting at the group's Washington headquarters

    Following through on its threat, Venezuela's government announced on Wednesday it is quitting the Organization of American States, accusing the regional body of meddling in its internal affairs over weeks of political unrest. The step was taken just hours after violent clashes in Caracas between security forces and protesters during yet another march against the socialist government of President Nicolas Maduro.

    Cuba denies visas to OAS chief, ex Mexican president and ex Chilean minister

    In a letter to Rosa Maria Paya, Almagro said the Cuban consulate informed him that he would not be granted a visa and the purpose of the visit was provocation.

    The Organization of American States Secretary-General Luis Almagro said Wednesday that the Cuban government denied him permission to enter the island to receive a human rights prize created to honor late dissident Oswaldo Paya. Mexican ex-President Felipe Calderon and former Chilean Education Minister Maria Aylwin were denied entry to the island the day before.

    Mujica says Maduro is “mad as a hatter” and everybody in Venezuela “have gone nuts”

    Mujica said he respects the Venezuelan president but “this does not mean I can't say that he's mad, mad as a hatter”.

    Uruguayan ex president Jose Mujica said on Wednesday that in Venezuela “everybody has gone nuts” and president Nicolas Maduro is “mad as a hatter”. The former leader was reacting to the controversy between his former foreign minister and now OAS secretary general, Luis Almagro and Maduro.

    Guatemala/Belize conflict erupts following another border killing

    Guatemala slammed Belize for using “excessive force” and rejected the account of the Guatemalan man attempting to attack an armed patrol with a machete.

    Tensions over a disputed border between Guatemala and Belize again erupted over the weekend with a new shooting incident less than a month after Belizean soldiers killed a teen. Belize said one of its patrols had to shoot and wound a Guatemalan man who threatened them with a machete after he was found on the Belize side of the border with companions illegally prospecting for gold.

    OAS will lead independent investigation into Belize-Guatemala border incident

    Since the incident Guatemala has sent an estimated 3.000 elite troops to the border next to a long disputed area

    The Organization of American States (OAS) will conduct, at the request of the governments of Belize and Guatemala, an independent investigation of the April 20 border incident that led to the death of the Guatemalan minor Julio Rene Alvarado Ruano and in which his father and brother were wounded.
