  Falklands patrol HMS Forth arrives in the Islands

  

  The British Forces South Atlantic Islands and the Falkland Islands welcomed the arrival on Tuesday of the Royal Navy's next-generation patrol ship, HMS Forth. The ship has taken over the mission from HMS Clyde, which has offered protection to the Falklands and nearby South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands for the past 12 years.

  Falklands provides sea and air support for the search of missing Chilean aircraft

  

  Falkland Islands based PHAROS SG, on regular deployment as a South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands fishery patrol vessel, returned on Tuesday morning to Stanley Harbour, after assisting in the search for wreckage and debris from the Chilean C130 aircraft that went missing on Monday 09 December.

  South Sandwich Islands hold one of the world's enduring eight lava lake in a crater

  

  Satellite pictures confirm there is a persistent lava lake inside the crater of a remote British Overseas Territory (BOT) volcano. Few enduring lava lakes are known globally; the one at Mount Michael on Saunders Island in the South Atlantic may be only the eighth such example.

  Argentina recalls the Day of Affirmation of its Rights over the South Atlantic Islands

  

  Argentina recalled on Monday, 10 June, a new anniversary of the creation in 1829 of the “Political and Military command headquarters of the Malvinas Islands and adjacencies to Cape Horn in the Atlantic Sea”, and which has been incorporated to the official calendar as the Day of Affirmation of Argentine Rights over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and its surrounding maritime spaces.

  Foreign Office planning to ban drilling and mining offshore BOTs in South Atlantic

  

  British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is expected to institute a ban on fishing, drilling and freight transport in British overseas territories in the South Atlantic in an effort to protect wildlife in the area. The South Sandwich Islands, which plays host to Antarctic scientists but has no permanent residents, lie around 1,500km east of the Falkland Islands.

The landmark “Blue Belt” policy to work with the UK Overseas Territories to “create the largest marine sanctuaries anywhere in the world” has only furthered this standing, with commitments to create large protected areas around Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha in 2019 and 2020 respectively already widely welcomed.

  Falklands' Patrol Vessel HMS Clyde to be relieved by HMS Forth

  

  HMS Clyde celebrates her tenth anniversary in the South Atlantic this week. The Falklands Patrol Vessel was commissioned on July 5, 2007 and arrived on September 21.
