  Ushuaia plans to expand main port pier 251 meters and improve facilities

  

  Ushuaia, the world's most extreme south city and the gateway for Antarctica cruise tours is planning to upgrade its port facilities including the expansion of the main pier by 251 meters increasing the docking capacity for tourism vessels during the summer season.

  Argentina considering phasing out Patagonian ports' fisheries exports

  

  The Argentine government is considering phasing out the incentives which benefit Patagonian ports fisheries exports. The announcement was made by Jorge Metz, Ports Under Secretary during a recent visit to Bahía Blanca although pointing out the issue was still under consideration by the cabinet chief office, but some advances would be made public in a month's time.

  Night of fire and violence in Ushuaia as protestors are evicted from Government House grounds

  

  Ushuaia suffered a night of violence, tear and pepper gas and fire when riot police dislodged an 80-day protest camp and tents of striking teachers and government employees next to Tierra del Fuego Government House. Seven people were reported injured including a policeman and a fireman, when tents were set on fire, and unions claimed it was a savage and brutal display of government repression

  Controversy in Argentina over Malvinas invasion date: Macri will not attend any of the April 2 anniversary events

  

  Malvinas veterans expressed great displeasure with the official announcement that Argentine president Mauricio Macri will not be attending any of the programmed events in different cities and provinces on the 34th anniversary of the Argentine April 2 invasion of the Falklands/Malvinas Islands, according to Buenos Aires media.

  Ushuaia pickets lifted but Government house remains occupied by strikers

  

  Argentine extreme-south Tierra del Fuego province government unions blocking the main national highway to the capital Ushuaia decided to lift pickets, but agreed to continue with the several weeks occupation of the provincial government house in demand for the elimination of recently approved reforms to the pensions scheme.

  Argentina Antarctica Day was celebrated on Monday 22 February, recalling the 112th anniversary of the first time the country's flag was flown at the Meteorological and Magnetic Observatory in the Laure Island, South Orkneys in 1904.

  Ushuaia has received 58.000 cruise visitors since 15 September; “Queen Mary” expected next week

  

  An estimated 58,000 cruise visitors have landed in Ushuaia, extreme south of Argentina during the current 2015/16 season which took off last 15 September, according to the Tierra del Fuego Tourism Institute. The largest number was concentrated in January, with an estimated 25.000, and this weekend promises to be equally busy with several vessels calling with 10.000 passengers.

  Tierra del Fuego applauds end of dollar clamp in Argentina but cautions about domestic and Mercosur tourists

  

  Tierra del Fuego tourism industry praised the Argentine government's decisions to end the dollar clamp and make more transparent the foreign money exchange because “this will make the country, and Tierra del Fuego, highly competitive internationally”. However they also cautioned that consideration must be given to domestic and regional tourists which make up almost 45% of the number of the people visiting the extreme south of Argentina.

  Ushuaia cruise season takes off: 331 calls estimated in 2015/16

  

  The 2015/16 cruise season has taken off in Argentine Tierra del Fuego with the arrival on Monday, of 'Ushuaia' and 90 passengers, one of the 331 calls which are estimated according to Ushuaia authorities. Gianfranco Guardamagna head of the Tierra del Fuego Tourism Institute recalled the significance of the cruise industry for Ushuaia, since the austral city “commands 95% of all international Antarctic tourism”.
