    Temer extends a Rio Olympic Games open arms message to the world

    The Olympic Village, housing more than 17,000 participating athletes in one of Rio de Janeiro’s most beautiful settings, has just been inaugurated.

    With just a month to go to the Olympic Games, Michel Temer Brazil’s interim president, invites the world to experience the beauty of Rio de Janeiro. The following is his welcome message to the world’s athletes, officials and fans:

    There was a nasty surprise awaiting passengers in the arrivals hall at Rio De Janeiro's Galeao International Airport on Monday. Along with the relatives carrying flowers and taxi drivers waiting with name boards there were lines of off-duty police with banners that had a far more ominous message: “Welcome to Hell”.

    Rio under “state of public calamity” with seven weeks before the Olympics

    The Rio de Janeiro Olympics, which will run August 5-21, and Paralympics, which will run September 7-18, will be the first to be held in South America.

    Brazil's Rio state authorities have declared a “state of public calamity” over a major budget crisis, in order to release emergency funds to finance the Olympic Games. The decree authorizes the state to “adopt all necessary emergency measures to ration essential public services in order for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to take place”.
