  Uruguay rejects Peruvian ex-president Alan García's asylum petition

  

  Uruguay’s President, Tabaré Vázquez announced Monday along with Uruguayan Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa that Peruvian former president Alan García will not receive political asylum. The rejection of the request is due to the fact that in Peru “the three powers of the State operate” freely, said Vázquez.

  Japan's doors open again to Uruguayan beef after Shinzo Abe's Montevideo stop

  

  Uruguay's President Tabaré Vázquez met Sunday with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Montevideo. During the encounter, both leaders signed an agreement which opened Japan's market to beef exports from the South American country after 20 years.

  IDB US$ 130m loan to modernize Argentine-Uruguayan bi-national Salto Grande dam and power plant

  

  The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved two financing packages worth a total of US$ 130 million in support of a program to modernize the Argentine-Uruguayan bi-national hydroelectric power plant in Salto Grande and a program to boost the competitiveness of the productive and tourism sectors of that region, made up of the departments of Concordia and Federacion in the Argentine province of Entre Ríos and Salto department in Uruguay.

  Cannabis-based meds plant opens in Uruguay

  

  ICC Labs Inc., a subsidiary of Canada’s Aurora Cannabis Inc., opened Wednesday in Montevideo and became the subcontinent's first producer of cannabis-derived pharmaceuticals with a capacity “to supply almost the entire South American continent,” according to the company's CEO Alejandro Antalich.

  Aldyr Garcia Schlee, a professor who designed the Brazilian soccer team’s signature jersey, now instantly recognizable around the world, died last week at a hospital in Pelotas, Brazil.   Asylum to Alan García: Why Uruguay?

  

  The Territorial Asylum right under which Peru's former President Alan García seeks to protect himself, investigated by the Justice of his country, is framed in a convention signed in Caracas, Venezuela that provides that every State belonging to the Organization of American States (OAS) has the right to admit “the persons it deems appropriate.” Garcia's hope is based on Uruguay's record of respect for this right.
