    Ghiggia at the time was 22 and admits on scoring the second decisive goal (2 -1) he didn't realize until much later what a monumental feat had been achieved.

    “Only three people silenced Maracana: the Pope, Frank Sinatra and me”. The comment belongs to Alcides Ghiggia, Uruguay's last member and striker of the team that beat Brazil in the World Football Cup final of 1950 and thus winning the Jules Rimet Cup. It would be Uruguay's second world cup: the first in 1930 when it beat Argentina.

    Uruguay after a Mercosur 'action plan' to eliminate all inter-trade restrictions

    China becomes main importer of Uruguayan and Argentine frozen beef

    Data revealed that China’s consumption of frozen Argentine beef has boomed in recent months, with the Asian giant receiving 35.2% of total exports.

    China has become the largest importer of frozen Argentine beef, according to the latest data released by the Industry and Trade of Meat and Meat Produce Association (CICCRA). However these figures are far from neighboring Uruguay which in four months shipped to China almost 50.000 tons, that has become the country's leading market.

    UNESCO's World Heritage Committee approved the inscription of four cultural sites on the World Heritage List: Fray Bentos Cultural-Industrial Landscape in Uruguay; Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining in Japan, Ephesus in Turkey and Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque Hydraulic System in Mexico. The Committee also approved the extension of Spain’s Routes of Santiago de Compostela with the addition of the “Camino Francés and Routes of Northern Spain”.

    Uruguay experienced poor 2014/15 cruise season; costs in the region limited vessel calls

     The number of cruise calls in the 2014/15 season was down 27.4% this season and visitor landings, 18.9% pointed out minister Liliam Kechichian

    The 2014/15 cruise season was not encouraging for Uruguay which reported a drop in the number of vessels calling; passenger landings and money spent by the industry and visitors, according to the official assessment of the season presented by Tourism ministry officials and other government offices involved in the different operations.

    Mercosur summit will establish 'action plan' to speed discussions with Europe

    The Mercosur Council will establish an “action plan” at the next Mercosur presidential summit scheduled for 16/17 July in Brasilia, when the group's chair for the next six months will be handed to Paraguay by Brazil.
