  Argentine hoki fishery signs up for MSC certification

  

  The hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae magellanicus) trawl fishery operating in the Argentine Economic Exclusive Zone and adjacent waters entered full assessment to be considered for Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. It is the second South American fishery to officially seek MSC certification of sustainability.

  Argentine beef exports soared 57% last year but trend “is not sustainable”

  

  Argentine beef exports last year soared 57% in volume and 11% in value compared to 2008, having totalled 419.000 tons and 1.65 billion US dollars according to an official release from the country’s National Food Health and Quality Service, Senasa.

  Patagonian ports open to Chinese jiggers if they have no links with Falklands

  

  Argentine Fisheries Under-secretary Norberto Yauhar is sponsoring a fishing cooperation agreement with Beijing that will allow Chinese flagged vessels to enter Argentine ports for provisions, repairs, unloading catches and landing transfers. The only condition is that the Chinese vessels must not have commercial ties with the Falkland Islands government.

  Argentina rejects UK protest and territorial pretensions over the Falklands

  

  Argentina officially rejected Monday the United Kingdom’s protest against a bill which includes as Argentine territory the Falklands/Malvinas islands and other insular territories in the South Atlantic, according to a release in Buenos Aires from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  Buenos Aires real estate market recovering from worst year in a decade

  

  The metropolitan Buenos Aires real estate market closed 2009 as the worst in the last ten years with the number of registered sales below the 2001 level. The good news however is that for the first time since the last quarter of 2008, December registered the first year-on-year advance.

  Mujica expects a solution to pulp mill conflict with Argentina by next March

  

  Uruguay’s president-elect Jose Mujica said that the long standing conflict over the Botnia pulp mill, which has soured relations with neighbouring Argentina, will inevitably be solved but he will only be meeting with Argentine authorities and not with the pickets who are blocking bridges leading to Uruguay.
